He described her as a \u201csymbol of the democratic movement\u201d and said her struggle to establish \u201cdemocracy, a multi-party political culture and the rights of the people in Bangladesh will be remembered forever\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was \u201cdeeply saddened and grief-stricken by her death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Khaleda\u2019s longtime political rival, Sheikh Hasina, who remains in exile in India following her overthrow last year, also offered condolences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and for her role in the struggle to establish democracy, her contributions to the nation were significant and will be remembered. Her passing represents a profound loss for Bangladesh\u2019s political life and for the leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party,\u201d Hasina said in a post shared online by her Awami League.<\/p>\n<p>India<\/p>\n<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d by Khaleda\u2019s death and offered his \u201csincerest condolences\u201d to her family and the people of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sadness and described Zia as a \u201ccommitted friend of Pakistan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer lifelong service to Bangladesh and its growth and development leaves a lasting legacy,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and the people of Bangladesh during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>United States<\/p>\n<p>The US embassy in Dhaka extended its deepest condolences on Zia\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Zia played a pivotal role in shaping her country\u2019s modern history, and her leadership was instrumental in advancing Bangladesh\u2019s development,\u201d it wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Tributes pour in from around the world as Bangladesh mourns Khaleda Zia.
