The US won\u2019t let it,\u201d said Wang Yiming, vice-chairman of the China Centre for International Economic Exchanges, a Beijing-based governmental think tank, noting that the United States\u2019 <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/global-economy\/article\/3277319\/no-winners-us-small-yard-high-fence-approach-china-economist?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201csmall yard, high fence\u201d<\/a> policy leaves China no choice but to take the lead.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Speaking at a seminar held by Peking University\u2019s National School of Development on Sunday, Wang cautioned that the nation remains vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWe still haven\u2019t broken free from reliance on others for key core technologies because our ability to innovate from the ground up remains weak,\u201d said Wang, who is also an adviser to the central bank and a former official at the top economic planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Wang argued that China needs to forge a leading position in strategic sectors that match the trajectory of the future.
