{"id":380759,"date":"2025-12-30T16:38:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T16:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/380759\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T16:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T16:38:08","slug":"how-to-avoid-getting-into-trouble-when-using-ai-at-work-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/380759\/","title":{"rendered":"How to avoid getting into trouble when using AI at work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjj3318n00f027p8b4uybo23@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Love it or hate it, AI is increasingly becoming integral to the way we work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly00053b6pmq6verd5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So, like a lot of employees, you\u2019ve started using it for your assignments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly00063b6pyvltsghh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s great \u2013 unless you\u2019re not clear on what defines acceptable versus unacceptable uses of AI for your job and which specific tools your employer has approved or prohibited.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly00073b6pkqy3qe4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s how to get a better sense of all that and minimize potential trouble, even if your employer hasn\u2019t been great in spelling things out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly00093b6pzu6xds5i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Generative AI can be impressive \u2013 for instance, helping you find data or making connections you\u2019d otherwise miss; and testing work products for design flaws or mistakes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000a3b6pzhub3odw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the same time, it\u2019s also highly imperfect and subject to so-called \u201challucinations\u201d \u2013 defined by IBM as \u201ca phenomenon where (it) perceives patterns or objects that are nonexistent or imperceptible to human observers, creating outputs that are nonsensical or altogether inaccurate.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000c3b6prsh90874@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other words, it can produce hot garbage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000d3b6pefmvzzjv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An AI tool may be excused by its promoters for those hallucinations, but you won\u2019t be.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000e3b6p7g1avijf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s why when it comes to your job, \u201cnever blindly rely on AI,\u201d said Dave Walton, an employer-side attorney who co-chairs Fisher Phillips\u2019 AI, Data, and Analytics Practice Group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000f3b6piiyqs5rl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, view it as an initial assist. \u201cGenerative AI is the best thing in the world to get you from zero to not bad in 60 seconds,\u201d said Niloy Ray, a co-lead of the AI practice at the employer-side law firm Littler Mendelson.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000g3b6p8sbcdr6o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But, he added, \u201c\u2019Not bad\u2019 is rarely the standard to which you\u2019re working.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000h3b6pde8b7fkq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s up to you to verify anything you incorporate from AI into your projects. And to be transparent with your boss whenever you use it for that purpose.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000j3b6po2cjzkkk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s hard to say definitively how many employers have full-blown AI policies in place, though the numbers are likely on the rise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000k3b6pbw3ftvxa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some non-scientific surveys suggest it is a smaller share than the high percentages of employees who say they\u2019re already using AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000l3b6pu68o1up1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSelf-directed AI use has grown to 65%, creating both innovation and risk as employees explore tools ahead of formal guidance,\u201d according to the American Management Association, which surveyed 1,365 professionals in varying industries across 29 countries this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000m3b6pfaystuww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, a recent Littler survey of 349 professionals from US companies of varying sizes and industries found that 38% of companies said they created a specific policy for employee use of AI; another 13% said they\u2019d developed guidelines; and 19% indicated they fit AI use into pre-existing workplace policies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000n3b6p7g1blaf5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So, before doing anything else, check what AI policies and guidelines your employer has put in place.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000o3b6puop9q7ng@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If well done, those policies should offer a clear sense of the company\u2019s guiding principles on usage, a clear set of dos and don\u2019ts as well as a list of AI tools you are permitted to use and under what conditions. And it should make clear what disciplinary actions could result if you misuse them. (Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisherphillips.com\/a\/web\/du6wach1kmRuPCgDcMLJ5Z\/ai-policy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sample<\/a> from Fisher Phillips to give you an idea.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000p3b6pzosmaw3j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some types of companies may forbid AI use (e.g., a defense contractor) while others (such as banking and finance firms) may urge extreme caution or just don\u2019t have the appetite for it, Ray said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000q3b6ph6h4epbw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And other employers may license an AI tool that will be bespoke for company use or create its own internal AI tool, Walton said. In which case, use of publicly available third-party tools may be discouraged, restricted or prohibited.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000s3b6p1szwc6z9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If your employer doesn\u2019t have a dedicated AI policy, consult your company\u2019s other policies that apply to all your work efforts, including with AI, Ray suggested.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000t3b6ph9uansp0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those might include policies intended to protect your employer\u2019s confidential information, trade secrets or intellectual property \u2013 and relatedly, its cybersecurity and privacy policies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000u3b6pudhc576z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a general rule, if you\u2019re using a third-party tool like Chat GPT and a version of it that people outside of your company are using, never share confidential data or personally identifiable information, Walton said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000v3b6pzlowjy0f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Turn off the function that allows the AI tool to train on your inputs and configure it so the tool does not retain your queries, he suggested.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000x3b6pux9a4c87@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ray likens the security of using a publicly available AI tool to public parking. There\u2019s more chance someone could gain access to your car than if you parked in your own garage. \u201cThe ability to intercept data is much higher and you don\u2019t know who has access,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000y3b6pzxe9lah9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More broadly, he added, recognize that while AI may offer new tools for you to do your job, it doesn\u2019t change your obligations as an employee.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmjk7unly000z3b6pb6xhuquu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt end of day, you want to do what a conscientious and ethical employee would do on any given day,\u201d Ray noted.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Love it or hate it, AI is increasingly becoming integral to the way we work.
