Sixty confirmed measles cases have been detected in WA this year, the latest in a traveller who has returned from overseas.<\/p>\n
WA Health issued an alert on Tuesday that there had been another case of the highly infection disease diagnosed in the State, with two exposure sites in Beeliar.<\/p>\n
The confirmed locations were both visited on Saturday, December 27.<\/p>\n
Anyone who visited the Beeliar Hive Pharmacy between 10.15am and 11.15am or the Lagoon Medical Centre\/Beeliar Medicare Urgent Care Clinic from 8.15am to 11.00am should monitor for symptoms for seven to 18 days post-exposure.<\/p>\n
Measles\u2019 symptoms include fever, fatigue, a runny nose, red eyes and a cough, which is followed several days later by a prominent red rash.<\/p>\n
Health experts urge Australians to ensure their vaccinations are up to date before they leave the country.<\/p>\n
Infectious diseases professor Allen Cheng said overseas travel accounted for just under half of the cases recorded in Australia, while the rest, acquired locally, were typically linked to secondary exposure.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo someone has come back from overseas and transmitted it to someone locally, so it still does reflect that most of the cases are originating overseas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe advice for adults is that if you\u2019re going to go overseas, make sure you\u2019re up to date with vaccines and, not just measles, but everything else as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cSee your doctor before you go and have a bit of time before you go, not the day before you leave for overseas.\u201d<\/p>\n
