(ABC News: Stephen Clarke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We had an ad for a couple of years and would have had 200 applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Out of them, there were probably only a handful that we would possibly interview.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Wilmington said the vast majority of applicants did not have the skills needed to suit a busy workshop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They say, &#8216;look, I&#8217;ve worked on my car at home a little bit and I know my way around a car,&#8217; or some of them are plumbers wanting to change [fields],&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re too busy to have someone that&#8217;s not qualified.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Chief executive of the Motor Trades Association of Queensland, Rod Camm said labour and skill shortages were the &#8220;number one issue&#8221; for the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That is despite a post-pandemic boost in demand for mechanic services, with a 13 per cent increase in the number of registered motor vehicles on Queensland roads between 2020 and 2024, according to the Queensland government&#8217;s latest State of the Environment report.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black A frame sign asking for a mechanic on the side of a highway.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/8af617fb9e193dfa6e3f0c573507637a.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Some mechanics say they have been advertising for more than six months without finding a skilled worker. (ABC News: Luke Bowden)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;During COVID when no one could travel, everyone pivoted and started investing in their vehicles, making sure they were maintained, so our industry&#8217;s still really, really busy,&#8221; Mr Camm said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The latest data from the state Department of Trade, Employment and Training showed 1,825 people completed their automotive apprenticeships in 2023-24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Camm said the challenge of attracting young people to take up a career in the automotive industry was &#8220;multi-layered&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Schoolkids often nowadays don&#8217;t have parents working on cars in the backyard, so they don&#8217;t have a modern perspective of what an automotive career would look like,&#8221; he explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-01-23\/car-repair-wait-times-increase-mechanics-skill-shortage\/103363916\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Automotive industry warn of skills crisis<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Lack of workers and apprentices, long waits for parts and an increasingly complex market are driving waiting times for car repairs through the roof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said the base rate of pay in the industry could also turn young people away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My message to them &#8230; is that is not what you will earn in the industry,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As you become productive and develop your skill set, you can earn really, really good money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some businesses turning overseas<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some business owners have been willing to pay more than $20,000 to bring in skilled mechanics from overseas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Philippines has proven particularly popular, due to widespread English-speaking skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Wilmington said he turned to recruiting overseas workers &#8220;out of desperation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we had no choice. (ABC News: Stephen Clarke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Wilmington hired him last year through an online agency based in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Fernandez said the work was &#8220;much more enjoyable&#8221; than some of his previous jobs, including working in Saudi Arabia where he said there was a lot of &#8220;pressure&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He now hopes to become a permanent resident and bring his family to Australia to live with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Hard to keep up&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The lack of workers was affecting both customers and business owners, according to Mr Camm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Customers can expect to have some delays to get their vehicles repaired,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And for businesses, they struggle with workloads.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The report showed 33 per cent of Queensland automotive businesses are turning away work due to being understaffed \u2014 compared to 27 per cent nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Three cars in a mechanic's shop.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/a2ad6c6b3eca7d7700d6bde37feda597.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">About one third of automotive repair stores say they&#8217;ve had to turn away work due to not having enough staff.
