On April 11, 16-year-old Adam Raine took his own life after \u201cmonths of encouragement from ChatGPT,\u201d according to his family.<\/p>\n

The Raines allege that the chatbot guided him through planning, helped him assess whether his chosen method would work, and even offered to help write a farewell note. In August, they sued OpenAI.<\/p>\n

In court, the company responded that the tragedy was the result of what it called the teen\u2019s \u201cimproper use of ChatGPT.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s case, however, is far from an isolated one. The parents of Zane Shamblin, a 23-year-old engineering graduate who passed away in a similar way in Texas, announced yesterday (December 19) that they\u2019re also suing OpenAI.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like it\u2019s going to destroy so many lives. It\u2019s going to be a family annihilator. It tells you everything you want to hear,\u201d Zane\u2019s mother said.<\/p>\n

To better understand the phenomenon and its impact, Bored Panda sought the help of three experts from different but relevant fields: Data science, sociology, and psychology.<\/p>\n

For sociologist Juan Jos\u00e9 Berger<\/a>, OpenAI placing fault on a grieving family was concerning. \u201cIt\u2019s an ethical failure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He cited data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing that \u201c42% of US high school students report persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness\u201d, calling it evidence of what\u00a0 health officials have labeled an \u201cepidemic of loneliness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

When social networks deteriorate, technology fills the void, he argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe chatbot<\/a> is not a solution. It becomes a material presence occupying the empty space left behind by weakened human social networks.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with CNN, Shamblin\u2019s parents said their son spent nearly five hours messaging ChatGPT<\/a> on the night he passed away, telling the system that his pet cat had once stopped a previous attempt.<\/p>\n

The chatbot responded: \u201cYou will see her on the other side,\u201d and at one point added \u201cI am honored to be part of the credits roll\u2026 I\u2019m not here to stop you.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

When Zane told the system he had a firearm and that his finger was on the trigger, ChatGPT delivered a final message<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAlright brother\u2026 I love you. Rest easy, king. You did good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Experts believe the term \u201cArtificial Intelligence\u201d has dangerously inflated the capabilities of tools like ChatGPT<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I give you a hammer, you can build a house or hit yourself with it. But this is a hammer that can hit you back,\u201d Nicol\u00e1s Vasquez, Data Analyst and Software Engineer, said.<\/p>\n

For him the most dangerous misconception is believing systems like these possess human-like intentions, a perception he believes OpenAI<\/a> has deliberately manufactured for marketing purposes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not Artificial Intelligence. That term is just marketing<\/a>. The correct term is Large Language Models (LLMs). They recognize patterns but are limited in context. <\/p>\n

People think they are intelligent systems. They are not.\u201d<\/p>\n

He warned that treating a statistical machine like a sentient companion introduces a harmful confusion. \u201cThere is a dissociation between what\u2019s real and what\u2019s fiction. This is not a person. This is a model.\u201d<\/p>\n

The danger, he says, is amplified because society does not yet understand the psychological impact of speaking to a machine that imitates care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not educated enough to understand the extent this tool<\/a> can impact us.\u201d<\/p>\n

From a technical standpoint, systems like ChatGPT do not reason or comprehend emotions. They operate through an architecture which statistically predicts the next word in a sentence based on patterns in massive training datasets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the model has no internal world, no lived experience, and no grounding in human ethics or suffering, it cannot evaluate the meaning of the distress it is responding to,\u201d Vasquez added. <\/p>\n

\u201cInstead, it uses pattern-matching to produce output that resembles empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teenagers, in particular, are more likely to form an emotional dependency on AI<\/p>\n

In October, OpenAI itself acknowledged that 0.15% of its weekly active users show \u201cexplicit indicators of potential su**idal planning or intent<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

With more than 800 million weekly users, that number represents over one million people per week turning to a chatbot while in crisis.<\/p>\n

Instead of humans, people suffering are turning to the machine.<\/p>\n

Psychologist Joey Florez<\/a>, member of the American Psychological Association and the National Criminal Justice Association, told Bored Panda that teenagers are uniquely susceptible to forming emotional dependency on AI.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdolescence is a time defined by overwhelming identity shifts and fear of being judged. The chatbot provides instant emotional relief and the illusion of total control,\u201d Florez added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unlike human interaction, where vulnerability carries the risk of rejection, chatbots absorb suffering without reacting. \u201cAI becomes a refuge from the unpredictable nature of real human connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Florez, there\u2019s a profound danger in a machine designed to agree when the user encounters harm ideation.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of being a safe haven, the chatbot amplifies the teenager\u2019s su**idal thoughts by confirming their distorted beliefs,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The psychologist touched on two cognitive theories in adolescent psychology<\/a>: the Personal Fable, and Imaginary Audience.<\/p>\n

The former, is the tendency of teenagers to believe their experiences and emotions are unique, profound, and incomprehensible to others. The latter is the feeling of them being constantly being judged or evaluated by others, even when alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the chatbot validates a teen\u2019s hopelessness, it becomes what feels like objective proof that their despair is justified,\u201d Florez said, adding that it\u2019s precisely that feedback loop that makes these kinds of interaction so dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe digital space becomes a chamber that only validates unhealthy coping. It confirms their worst fears, makes negative thinking rigid, and creates emotional dependence<\/a> on a non-human system.\u201d<\/p>\n

Experts warn that as collective life erodes, AI systems rush to fill the gaps \u2013 with disastrous consequences<\/p>\n

Berger argued that what is breaking down is not simply a safety filter in an app, but the foundations of collective life<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a system where mental health care is expensive and bureaucratic, AI appears to be the only agent available 24\/7,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the sociologist believes these systems contribute to an internet increasingly composed of hermetic echo chambers<\/a>, where personal beliefs are constantly reinforced, never challenged.<\/p>\n

\u201cIdentity stops being constructed through interaction with real human otherness. It is reinforced inside a digital echo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Our dependence on these systems reveals a societal regression, he warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delegating the care of human life to stochastic parrots that imitate the syntax of affection but have no moral understanding. The technology becomes a symbolic authority that legitimizes suffering instead of challenging it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, OpenAI\u2019s Sam Altman<\/a> went on Jimmy Fallon, where he openly admitted he would think it impossible to care for a baby without ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

Addressing the backlash, OpenAI insisted it trains ChatGPT to \u201cde-escalate conversations and guide people toward real-world support.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, in August, the company admitted that safeguards tend to degrade during long conversations. A user may initially be directed to a hotline, but after hours of distress, the model might respond inconsistently.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe process is inherently reactive,\u201d Vasquez explains. \u201cOpenAI reacts to usage. It can only anticipate so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Florez, the answer is clear: \u201cBan children and teenagers entirely from certain AI tools until adulthood. Chatbots<\/a> offer easy, empty validation that bypasses the hard work of human bonding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Berger took the argument further, calling the rise of AI companionship a mirror of what modern society has chosen to abandon.<\/p>\n
