{"id":383036,"date":"2025-12-31T17:43:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T17:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/383036\/"},"modified":"2025-12-31T17:43:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T17:43:10","slug":"melbourne-team-restores-dazzle-to-buildings-copper-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/383036\/","title":{"rendered":"Melbourne team restores dazzle to buildings\u2019 copper features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lifting spirits: Martini working on elevators in the Manchester Unity building.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/094cd11647aac70d7803c265d624bfc987cb0437.jpeg\" height=\"390\" width=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lifting spirits: Martini working on elevators in the Manchester Unity building.Credit: Jason South<\/p>\n<p>In a mansion in Sydney, James is restoring 200 objects, including copper tulip-shaped garden lamps.<\/p>\n<p>His right-hand man is Paul Martini, 31, formerly a chef at Frantzen, a three Michelin-starred restaurant in Stockholm, Sweden.<\/p>\n<p>Working at Melbourne CBD restaurant Izakaya Den in 2023, Martini noticed James polishing copper on a building facade near his apartment, was intrigued by a sign saying Copper Doctors and struck up a conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Tired of long hours in kitchens and drawn to working outdoors, on a range of jobs, while still working with his hands, Martini began working with James on his days off.<\/p>\n<p>James liked Martini\u2019s work ethic and focus, and by April 2024, Martini became a full-time Copper Doctor. The team still includes casuals for bigger jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The company works in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Geelong. The team has polished the copper panels at the Arts Centre Melbourne\u2019s Playhouse Bar, and is working in Swanston Street\u2019s Manchester Unity Building.<\/p>\n<p>James is proud of their work this year on Melbourne Town Hall\u2019s two formerly dull, now dazzling, copper doors. They also restored the brass frame of the hall\u2019s main glass doors, which are adorned with images from Melbourne\u2019s coat of arms.<\/p>\n<p>Upcoming projects include restoring brass plaques at the war memorial atop Mount Macedon.<\/p>\n<p>James aspires to work on the Sydney Opera House, which, he says, has \u201ckilometres of brass rails\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"James and Martini in front of Clover restaurant in Richmond, where they restored copper in the facade.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/6d00dc8a9495c4d3c506ddbf9ca3fdb4a4f57a2e.jpeg\" height=\"390\" width=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>James and Martini in front of Clover restaurant in Richmond, where they restored copper in the facade.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, James was MC at Martini\u2019s wedding. Martini says the career change has been \u201cunbelievable\u201d and \u201cone of the best things that has ever happened to me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The job takes patience and can be tedious, but is rewarding, Martini says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople stop and say, \u2018Wow. Look at that, look at the difference\u2019.
