They sustain tremendous amounts of pressure in total darkness and get their energy from chemical reactions rather than from the sun. (Image credit: Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS (IDSSE, CAS))<\/p>\n<p>The newly identified communities were in trenches in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/hadal-zone\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/hadal-zone\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hadal zone<\/a> \u2014 the region of the ocean below about 20,000 feet (6,000 m). Hadal trenches include some of the deepest parts of the ocean and are largely unexplored.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting \u2014 especially for a deep sea scientist \u2014 to go to a place that human beings have not explored,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zgcforum.com\/en\/guest\/t7902\/319220\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.zgcforum.com\/en\/guest\/t7902\/319220\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Xiaotong Peng<\/a>, one of the study&#8217;s lead authors and deputy director of the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3wnqe5j99do\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c3wnqe5j99do\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told BBC News<\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s a great opportunity to discover new things. Researchers have long proposed that the hadal trenches host communities powered by other chemical reactions that rely on hydrogen sulfide and methane emanating from the seafloor, but such chemosynthesis-based communities are rarely documented, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the deep ocean remains unexplored. (Image credit: Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, CAS (IDSSE, CAS))<\/p>\n<p>For the new study, the researchers worked their way along the Kuril-Kamchatka and Aleutian trenches, covering depths ranging from 19,029 to 31,276 feet (5,800 to 9,533 m). This region is very geologically active and hosts many volcanically and seismically active sites, according to the study.
