The death toll on WA roads fell slightly in 2025, but was still higher than this decade\u2019s average.<\/p>\n

Official road fatality statistics updated on December 22 recorded 181 people deaths, in comparison to 188 in 2024.<\/p>\n

AFLW player Halle Cameron-Phillips\u2019 death in a Busselton car crash on December 28 has not yet been included in the official toll.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old died after the Toyota Kluger she was driving collided with a Holden Commodore on Marine Terrace.<\/p>\n

More deaths were seen in WA\u2019s regional areas, with 98 people killed on country roads compared to 83 in the city.<\/p>\n

People aged 20 to 29 were also the most likely to die on the roads, followed by those aged 30 to 39.<\/p>\n

Sadly, seven children aged under 16 also lost their lives in 2025.<\/p>\n

Of the 181 deaths, 114 were in cars, 33 were pedestrians, 27 were riding motorbikes, and seven were riding bikes.<\/p>\n

The improvement in WA bucked the countrywide trend, with the National Road Safety Hub data showing 2025 was the worst year in Australia for road deaths in a decade.<\/p>\n

Nationwide, 1332 people died on Australian roads up to November, a three per cent increase from 2024.<\/p>\n

This was the worst year nationally since 2010, when 1353 lives were lost on Australian roads.<\/p>\n

In December, the Australian Automobile Association urged the federal government to reassess its overall approach to road safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe starting point to addressing our worsening road toll is to understand what caused it to rise in the first place,\u201d the association\u2019s Michael Bradley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly by undertaking no-blame investigations can we properly understand our current problems and identify targeted solutions to reduce road trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the lead-up to the holiday period, WA Police pledged a zero-tolerance policy for dodgy drivers.<\/p>\n

The double demerit period kicked off at midnight on December 19 and will continue until January 4.<\/p>\n

Police significantly ramped up their presence over the festive period across WA to keep more eyes out for bad driving behaviour.<\/p>\n

WA also rolled out new smart cameras in 2025, which picked up more than 380,000 offences in eight months.<\/p>\n

The AI-powered cameras were installed across Perth, and regional WA, and fixed cameras were installed along the Kwinana Freeway.<\/p>\n

These cameras found drivers taking part in dangerous behaviour, including incorrect seatbelt use, mobile phone use, speeding, smoking drugs, drinking alcohol and even kids moving about freely within cars.<\/p>\n

Last month, Road Policing Command commander Mike Peters said police would be deployed around WA with a particular focus on the 400km \u201carc of influence\u201d around Perth, spanning south to Bunbury, east to Merredin and north to Lancelin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be taking a very zero tolerance approach to speed, impairment, seat belts and distraction, we will continue to enforce those things,\u201d Cmdr. Peters said.<\/p>\n
