After one second half drive, Kalen DeBoer and Alabama football\u2019s<\/a> staff made a decision. UA took out quarterback Ty Simpson<\/a> and put Austin Mack into the game for its second possession after halftime.<\/p>\n

The ESPN broadcast noted that the move was a coaches decision following Simpson\u2019s play after he took a big hit in the first half. After the game, DeBoer explained the move a bit more.<\/p>\n

He praised his quarterback\u2019s mentality in the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, Ty had an injury,\u201d DeBoer said. \u201cObviously he really wanted to try and go out there. We treated him there at halftime and he gave it a series. He feels like he let down the team. There\u2019s no way that that\u2019s the case. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe went out there and tried to battle. That\u2019s who he is, so I\u2019m never going to let that be a thing where he let us down in any way. So, making sure that he knows that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simpson told reporters in the locker room after the loss that he had a cracked rib which was discovered at halftime.<\/p>\n

No matter who the quarterback was, Alabama\u2019s offense struggled mightily. The Crimson Tide lost the Rose Bowl 38-3, ending its season in the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff.<\/p>\n

Simpson finished 12-of-16 for 67 yards. Mack, a redshirt sophomore who has been Simpson\u2019s main backup all season, went 11-for-16 passing for 103 yards.<\/p>\n

\u201cAustin being ready to go, he did some nice things when he got out there on the football there tonight,\u201d DeBoer said. \u201cJust getting put in a tough spot when you\u2019re trying to catch up and it\u2019s the third quarter already, so proud of all of our team, but that was the situation at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indiana will move on to the Peach Bowl semifinal in Atlanta, where it will face Oregon.
