Great news for women over 60. Mel Owens apparently had a change of heart regarding his dating prospects on The Golden Bachelor<\/a> after he had the entire concept of the show\u2014and, it seems, women\u2019s emotions in general\u2014broken down for him by a woman he knew. In June<\/a>, the 66-year-old NFL player turned lawyer enraged Bachelor Nation when he stated that if any of the women competing for his heart were \u201c60 or over, I\u2019m cutting them.’\u201d The news was even worse for women with \u201cartificial hips and\u2026 wigs,\u201d whom he reportedly told producers to avoid.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In Owens\u2019 defense, he apparently \u201cdidn\u2019t know anything\u201d about the show on which he had been cast, as he insisted several times in a new interview with Glamour<\/a>. It took his friend\u2014a 65-year-old woman who somehow managed to maintain a career as a \u201chot shot\u201d lawyer without shriveling up the second she turned 61\u2014to explain that his comments may have been a bit insensitive. \u201cI didn\u2019t know the age range because I wasn\u2019t watching it,\u201d he reiterated. \u201cI\u2019m thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That\u2019s my age range.\u201d (Again, this man is 66.) \u201cMy reference, again, was when I was dating at 39, 40,\u201d he continued. \u201cI hadn\u2019t dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that\u2019s why I said that comment. I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Contestants with fake hips can also rest a little easier; Owens represents people with injuries, and \u201ca lot of them have artificial [hips and knees]\u2026 so I know that people have them.\u201d\u00a0 He also said he apologized to the women in-person on the first day he entered the mansion, which he wanted to do before addressing his comments publicly. \u201cI said, \u2018It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance,’\u201d Owens recalled, admitting that the contestants roasted him a lot in the aftermath. At least he seems to be growing a bit from the experience. \u201cIt was good because I earned that, and I took it and I deserved it, and it landed squarely on me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It also sounds like he learned some valuable lessons about women in general. \u201cI\u2019m absolutely shocked at the women,\u201d he said, before elaborating when pressed that he was specifically shocked by \u201chow active they are. They\u2019re brilliant. They\u2019re brilliant. It\u2019s shocking how brilliant they are.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

When his interviewer responded that women have \u201calways been brilliant,\u201d Owens had the following to say: \u201cBut no, I\u2019m talking about collectively\u2026 I have a sister. And I\u2019m at the court, and there\u2019s tons of lawyers there, of course, but the things they do, like one was a bomb squad person and there\u2019s a couple dentists, a doctor, a motocross racer, a flight attendant for 40 years. You have all these varied professions. And they\u2019re not 40. They\u2019re 60, 65, maybe 70. And they go, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m still working. I\u2019m still riding. I have my practice.\u2019 So there it is. It\u2019s right in front of you.\u201d Insightful stuff.
