Buried within its pages are moments that continue to unsettle the conscience of the game. Raman Lamba’s story is one such chapter, where promise, provocation, and tragedy are woven together in a way Indian cricket would rather not remember, but must never forget.

Born on January 2, 1960, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Raman Lamba was an aggressive right-handed opening batter who made his name through sheer force of personality as much as performance. Though his international career comprised just four Test matches, Lamba carved out a strong reputation in domestic cricket, where he was seen as a reliable opener with an uncompromising edge. His career, however, would come to be defined not by numbers alone, but by a single incident that left an indelible scar on Indian cricket.

That incident tied Lamba’s name forever to Baroda fast bowler Rashid Patel, a cricketer whose international career flickered briefly before fading away. Patel made his lone Test appearance against New Zealand in Mumbai in November 1988, but failed to impress and never played for India again. While his name gradually disappeared from scorecards, one afternoon ensured it would remain etched in cricket’s darkest memory.

Duleep Trophy Final 1991: When the Game Lost Control

The setting was the Duleep Trophy final at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur, played between January 25 and 29, 1991. Kapil Dev’s North Zone took on Ravi Shastri’s West Zone. North Zone piled up a massive 729 for 9, to which West Zone replied with 561. After four days of hard cricket, the match appeared to be drifting safely towards a draw.

On the final day, North Zone began their second innings with Ajay Jadeja and Raman Lamba opening the batting. Lamba, already fresh from a commanding 180 in the first innings, looked in full control as the score moved to 59 without loss in just under ten overs. Nothing, at that moment, suggested what was about to unfold.

From Anger to Violence

Rashid Patel, bowling with visible anger, resorted to short-pitched deliveries that began veering into dangerous territory. Lamba responded by showing the handle of his bat, an unmistakable sign of protest. It was a flashpoint. Patel’s restraint snapped.

Charging in from almost halfway down the pitch, Patel hurled a beamer that narrowly missed Lamba’s head. What followed was unprecedented. Patel ran towards Lamba in an attempt to confront him physically, forcing the batter to retreat towards third man in self-defence. The stadium fell into stunned silence as players, officials, and spectators struggled to process what they were witnessing.

Chaos soon followed. Enraged spectators began throwing stones. Vinod Kambli, fielding at the boundary, was struck and injured. The situation deteriorated rapidly, forcing players off the field and into the pavilion. Eventually, the Duleep Trophy was awarded to North Zone captain Kapil Dev, not through result, but necessity.

The aftermath was severe. Rashid Patel received a 13-month ban, while Raman Lamba was handed a 10-month suspension for his role in escalating the confrontation. While Lamba’s aggressive response was acknowledged, it was the violence that truly shook the sport. The incident tore at cricket’s moral fabric and left the game deeply wounded.

A Life Cut Short on the Field

Tragically, Raman Lamba’s story did not end in Jamshedpur. Seven years later, in 1998, while playing club cricket in Bangladesh, Lamba was fielding at short leg without a helmet. Batsman Mehrab Hossain struck a fierce shot that hit Lamba directly on the head. He collapsed instantly.

Lamba was rushed from Dhaka to Zurich for emergency treatment, but despite every effort, he could not be saved. He died at the age of 38.

His death placed him among a tragic list of cricketers who lost their lives on the field, alongside England’s Andy Ducat and West Indies’ Wilfred Slacke. More importantly, it forced the cricketing world to confront uncomfortable questions about player safety, particularly the absence of protective gear for close-in fielders.

Even today, Raman Lamba’s story serves as a sobering reminder that no matter how grand the game may be, nothing in cricket is more valuable than a player’s life.

– Ends

Published By:

Debodinna Chakraborty

Published On:

Jan 2, 2026

The history of Indian cricket is not merely a tale of victories, records, and silverware.
