A new warning has been issued for Sydney after a person with confirmed case of measles returned from Indonesia, where there are ongoing outbreaks of the virus.<\/p>\n

The person was alerted after returning to Australia that they had shared a flight with someone else confirmed to be infected.<\/p>\n

NSW Health has issued an alert for people in northern Sydney to monitor for symptoms if they have visited certain locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cSymptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes, runny nose and a cough, usually followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body,\u201d Northern Sydney Local Health District\u2019s Dr Sean Tobin said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after an exposure, so it\u2019s important for people who visited these locations to look out for symptoms until 18 January 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

The World Health Organisation says the virus \u201cremains one of the most contagious respiratory viruses\u201d known to us.<\/p>\n

Particularly dangerous to children, about one in five kids who contract the virus end up in hospital and 10,000 people worldwide were killed by it in 2024.<\/p>\n

Measles is spread through the air when someone infected coughs or sneezes.<\/p>\n

It can however, be prevented by vaccines.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to remind the community to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations. The measles vaccine can prevent the disease even after exposure, if given early enough,\u201d Dr Tobin said.<\/p>\n

NSW Health is urging anyone born after 1965 to have ensure they have had two rounds of the vaccine, reminding people that if you are unsure if you have had one or two \u2013 additional doses are safe.<\/p>\n

Dr Tobin said the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is \u201csafe and effective and is given free for children at 12 and 18 months of age\u201d.<\/p>\n
