[They] were incredulous and said: &#8216;That can&#8217;t be true&#8217;, and then they saw it on the news that night,&#8221; Ms McKay said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The shooter, Leonard Lawson, was eventually sentenced to life in prison.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He became known as the &#8220;comic-book killer&#8221; and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-12-10\/comic-book-killer-leonard-lawson-art-covered-up-grafton-gaol\/104701592\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104701592\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the fate of murals he painted on the walls of the old Grafton jail was recently the subject of furious debate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Despite that dark chapter in its history, Ms McKay, now 73, said it was &#8220;terribly tragic&#8221; that the historic buildings have deteriorated beyond the point of restoration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"montage of news clippings\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ac4a86948ca2a7aa9831d03f6279277b\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Notorious criminal Leonard Lawson and his artworks continued to make news throughout his life. (Composite: Hannah Ross)<\/p>\n<p>Money issues close school<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was financial mismanagement, rather than tragedy, that forced the school to close 13 years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Local historian David Baxter said a misappropriation of funds by the controller of the Anglican Diocesan schools caused the wider SCEGGS network to disband, resulting in the closure of campuses at Moss Vale, Bowral, and Wollongong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said during its prime, SCEGGS Moss Vale was a well-known institution in private education run on a 150-hectare property with an on-site dairy, ornate gardens, tennis court, and lake.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The building is now deteriorated. (Supplied: David Baxter\/Archive Heritage)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Heather Cobham attended the school as a boarder in 1974 and said she enjoyed the close-knit community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was like having the sisters I never had. I also remember it being a very sporty place too,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was incredibly sad when it closed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Baxter said the site had a colourful history long before it became a school.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Home, railway for state politician<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The hilltop property called &#8220;Austermere&#8221; was acquired by English settler William Hutchins in 1822 before being passed on to his son-in-law Sir John Lackey, a magistrate and NSW politician.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The property included a private railway line, which allowed Sir John to travel to Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It was basically used to drop him home,&#8221; Mr Baxter said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"White haired man in thick jumper smiling outside metal gate\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/f4bd416e17fcb145dab6e7f83fbde184\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">David Baxter says the former SCEGGS site has a rich past, dating back to the early 1800s.
