Romance novel renaissance<\/a><\/p>\nOnce trivialised as a low-brow guilty pleasure, the romance novel is enjoying a renaissance.<\/p>\n
For First Nations authors the genre represents an opportunity to showcase often overlooked but essential parts of Indigenous relationships and culture around love, connection, and family.<\/p>\n
“Many of our authors have been busy rewriting the history books and that is a real priority and a necessity in terms of truth-telling in Australia,” Heiss said.<\/p>\n
“The reality is we have been loving on this land for millennia \u2026 but we just haven’t written about it as a matter of priority.”<\/p>\n
‘World-first’ blak love stories collection in the works<\/p>\n
A new project from Indigenous publishing house Magabala Books is seeking to put blak love stories front and centre in the romance genre, creating a “world-first” anthology of First Nations love stories.<\/p>\n
Bigambul and Wakka Wakka woman Melanie Saward is one of the three editors working on the collection.<\/p>\n
“There hasn’t been a romance anthology like this before,” she said.<\/p>\n
“We’re really excited to read new love stories from people that you might know and not expect them to be writing romance stories, and hearing some new voices.”<\/p>\n

A published author and academic, Saward says she wants to see more Indigenous authors find success.<\/p>\n
“The publishing industry often approaches Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people looking for our trauma stories and our past,” she said.<\/p>\n
“They are not always looking for the really deadly things about being a blackfella and the fun things and the joy.<\/p>\n
“Romance for us is an important genre because we know that it’s the fastest growing global genre. It is a genre that has hope and love and joy, and it’s sexy and it can be a bit silly.<\/p>\n
“Also it’s a vehicle where we can show and teach readers about empathy and things that are going on for mob. But mostly it is just a fun, funny kind of story.”<\/p>\n
Dulgubarra-Yidinji woman Skye Cusack is one of the up-and-coming authors making a submission to the anthology.<\/p>\n
“I grew up very disconnected from my culture. I feel really lucky now that I’ve reconnected with my family and I’m starting to learn my stories,” she said.<\/p>\n
“That was a big part of why I didn’t write for so long because I didn’t know how to write an Aboriginal person that was confident.<\/p>\n
“And then I realised one day, well, maybe that’s the story.<\/p>\n

“When I’m writing romance especially it’s not just about falling in love with another person, it’s a lot about getting to know your culture and your identity and learning your stories and forming a relationship with culture just as much as the person.”<\/p>\n
For Cusack, romance is the perfect medium for multidimensional characters and stories.<\/p>\n
“I think it’s really important to talk about the past and to talk about pain and history and reparations and reconciliation,” she said.<\/p>\n
“But I also think for a long time in the industry that’s been the only expectation and the only request of First Nation writers \u2014 to talk about pain.<\/p>\n
“Blackfellas are hilarious and they’re romantic and they are silly and we can be all sorts of things, just like any other human being on the planet.”<\/p>\n
