Wildlife rangers in the Top End have caught their first crocodile of the year in a creek where children were swimming just a day earlier.<\/p>\n
The 2.7-metre female saltwater reptile was caught in a trap in a Darwin rural area on New Year\u2019s Day by the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife croc unit.<\/p>\n
Veteran ranger Tom Nichols said on Friday \u201ckids swim in that area\u201d.<\/p>\n
Children were reportedly in the water there on New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p>\n
A passerby alerted NT Parks and Wildlife on Thursday that there was a croc in a trap on the creek that had been set with pig bait, Nichols said.<\/p>\n
He and another ranger followed normal procedure, putting a snout rope over the croc\u2019s top jaw, then doubling up with a zip tie before pulling the reptile from the trap and tying it up with duct tape<\/p>\n
\u201cWe never release saltwater crocs, they go to a croc farm,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In response to a Parks and Wildlife Facebook post on the croc capture, one user posted: \u201cTommy still catching the handbags\u201d.<\/p>\n
With wet season in the Top End, and water spreading everywhere, crocodiles were more active and could be present in any waterway, said Nichols, who has been with Parks and Wildlife for more than 45 years.<\/p>\n
In 2025 the croc unit captured 202 reptiles that may have posed a threat to people.<\/p>\n
Parks and Wildlife is urging residents and visitors in the Top End to \u201cbe crocwise\u201d and parents to talk with their children about the risks around water of the ambush predators.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the hot weather and plenty of water around, it\u2019s understandable that swimming or fishing near the water\u2019s edge can be tempting,\u201d the service said on its Facebook page.<\/p>\n
It advises people to stay five metres away from the water at all times.<\/p>\n
