Fire authorities are working to determine whether anyone was home when a significant fire broke out at a house at Bentley, in Perth’s south, on Sunday morning. \u00a0<\/p>\n

A single-storey house on Stannard Street, Bentley, was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived just before midday.<\/p>\n

Crews were battling the blaze when the roof partially collapsed, forcing them to retreat and continue fighting the fire from outside the building.<\/p>\n

Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) incident controller David Broadbent said “over half the roof has caved in at the property”.<\/p>\n

It is believed two people lived at the property and, as of Sunday afternoon, authorities were still “working to ensure that everybody is accounted for,” Mr Broadbent said.<\/p>\n

Taxing conditions<\/p>\n

Four DFES crews consisting of more than 20 firefighters fought the blaze, which took about one hour to control.<\/p>\n

“It was a significant house fire in terms of how much of the property was involved, and then when you have weather conditions like this it just naturally drains our resources to a higher level, so we did have a lot of resources here today,” Mr Broadbent explained.<\/p>\n

Mr Broadbent said firefighters worked in “very tough conditions”.<\/p>\n

“The firefighters should be commended for their efforts today. They really, really worked hard. It was very taxing conditions,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Broadbent said initial investigations indicate the fire started towards the “middle-rear” of the property but said the cause was still unclear.<\/p>\n

DFES said two firefighters were taken to hospital for heat exhaustion but were later discharged.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Bomb sound’<\/p>\n

Hannah (surname withheld), who lives next door to the property, was making lunch when she heard what she described as “a bomb sound”.<\/p>\n

“I looked over and I saw a huge [plume of] smoke and I called my friend and we evacuated,” she said.<\/p>\n

Fellow neighbour, Aryan (surname withheld), was sitting in his living room when he also heard a noise.<\/p>\n

“We heard a bang noise, and after a couple of minutes there was a beeping noise going on and we thought something was happening to our car,” Aryan said.<\/p>\n

“When we went to our window, we saw a fire at the back of the house.”<\/p>\n

Aryan said he saw a man “working calmly” in the backyard of the home that was on fire, prompting him to call emergency services.<\/p>\n

“I have no idea [what happened to him] after that because we just tried to evacuate as soon as possible.”<\/p>\n
