The impact could be felt well beyond the footy field, with brand marketing gurus suggesting his bank balance could also be set for a hit if he doesn\u2019t act fast.<\/p>\n
Neale fronted the media on Friday to address his highly-publicised marriage breakdown with his wife, Jules Neale, following weeks of speculation.<\/p>\n
He said he took full responsibility and was \u201cdeeply sorry\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am extremely disappointed in my actions and the breakdown of my marriage which I take full responsibility for. It hurts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand that I am a role model and I\u2019ve probably let fans, not just of the Brisbane Lions but of the AFL down. I accept that responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Saturday morning, Jules \u2014 who has since moved back to Perth \u2014 posted on Instagram for the first time on social media since her estranged husband\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n
The post showed a video of her with friends making vision boards for the new year, captioned: \u201cThis is your sign to get the girls together and manifest your 2026 vibes \ud83e\udea9\ud83c\udf78\u2728\ud83e\udd0d #visionboard<\/a> #2026goals<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n Neale\u2019s life was flipped upside down after reports that his marriage with his wife was breaking down.<\/p>\n It created a publicity firestorm of rumours, with Jules\u2019 former friend Tess Crosley at the centre of the drama.<\/p>\n Jules confirmed the issue on social media after reports the pair were \u201cworking through\u201d their marriage.<\/p>\n She posted: \u201cI want to make it very clear that I am not \u2018working through\u2019 anything. I have been betrayed in the most unimaginable way. Thankyou for the love and support.\u201d<\/p>\n The video featured a close-up of a vision board with the phrases, \u201cmake happiness my priority\u201d, \u201cthe love I deserve is on its way to me\u201d, and \u201cgood things are coming\u201d.<\/p>\n The very public marriage breakdown has already had on-field implications for Neale, who stepped down as co-captain.<\/p>\n It\u2019s also likely to have a financial impact too, with existing brand deals and sponsorships potentially parting ways and new ones likely more difficult to come by.<\/p>\n Starring in commercials for Cash Converters, filming videos for Telstra and sporting Puma shoes on the field, the 294-gamer\u2019s endorsements stack up to place him among the league\u2019s best-paid players.<\/p>\n Philippa Crosthwaite, creative director and co-founder of The Brand Bar, said as a role model Neale needed to face the music and earn back the public\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n \u201cPersonal brands are essentially built on trust, consistency and values alignment so when something like this happens, it causes a trust gap with fans, stakeholders and the general public,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cSponsors buy into value alignment as well as performance. Right now there\u2019s a risk element that\u2019s been introduced with the controversy, so they may be pausing or seeing if it escalates.\u201d<\/p>\n Ms Crosthwaite said the timing of Neale\u2019s press conference on January 2 \u2014 usually a dead period for the AFL \u2014 was a \u201cstrategic\u201d move, \u201cin a quiet news cycle it allows the athlete in question to address it directly and reduce speculation\u201d.<\/p>\n Reputational damage isn\u2019t always permanent, it\u2019s highly dependent on his response to the incident now and rebuilding that trust over consistent behaviour over time.<\/p>\n \u201cEveryone will be looking to how he responds . . . it\u2019s all about the response essentially, the response is sometimes a lot bigger than (the scandal),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cTransparency and accountability reduces long-term damage as audiences tend to be more forgiving when someone acknowledges the issue, speaks clearly and calmly and avoids any defensiveness, and the behaviour changes.\u201d<\/p>\n Other branding experts also told The Sunday Times the scandal would likely stay with Neale for the rest of his life, especially given he had previously maintained a family-man image.<\/p>\n They said discussions between brands worried about the impact of the scandal were likely already in talks with both Neale and the Brisbane Lions.<\/p>\n They couldn\u2019t predict how much Neale set to lose from the scandal, but said the impacts would be long lasting.<\/p>\n The four-time All-Australian was one of the first named in the pool of players that could dip in to the AFL\u2019s $35 million \u2018marketing fund\u2019 that was introduced ahead of the 2024 season.<\/p>\n It allows high-profile stars to earn extra money from the AFL\u2019s commercial partners \u2014 some players claiming upwards of $300,000.<\/p>\n With personal brand and marketability being two of the three pillars that decide eligible players, Neale\u2019s future in the select group remains up in the air.<\/p>\n The 32-year-old is also a free agent at the end of 2026, with speculation he could seek a move back to WA to be closer to family.<\/p>\n Before moving to the Lions at the end of 2018, Neale played for the Fremantle Dockers.<\/p>\n But any potential move could be impacted by the fallout, with teams less likely to pick up a player with baggage.<\/p>\n Despite the blow, history shows that athletes caught up in a infidelity scandal can either sink or swim when they come out the other side.<\/p>\n North Melbourne\u2019s Wayne Carey was the most infamous AFL example of how a scandal can tank a player\u2019s image after he was caught cheating with a teammate\u2019s wife, and the disgraced legend\u2019s reputation never fully recovered after his exit from the club.<\/p>\n But the likes of spin bowler Shane Warne managed to weather the storm that came from the breakdown of his marriage with Simone Callahan, remaining a beloved Australian icon.<\/p>\n \u201cSome athletes survive scandals because they have massive public goodwill, others run out of it.
