{"id":391100,"date":"2026-01-04T13:13:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T13:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/391100\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T13:13:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T13:13:07","slug":"sporadic-protests-in-tehran-as-clashes-reported-in-irans-west-protests-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/391100\/","title":{"rendered":"Sporadic protests in Tehran as clashes reported in Iran\u2019s west | Protests News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Protests fuelled by economic duress spiral into political ones in some cases as they spread to different cities.<\/p>\n<p>Sporadic protests have broken out in the Iranian capital, Tehran, and other cities, according to local media, which also report intensifying clashes in the west of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/2\/five-things-you-need-to-know-about-protests-in-iran-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">demonstrations<\/a> kicked off on December 28 when shopkeepers staged a strike over economic concerns, but a week later, they have spread in size and scope as protesters are also making political demands.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Tohid Asadi reported from Tehran on Sunday that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said the ongoing protests have yet to become nationwide in scope, asserting that they are not quickly gaining momentum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom time to time and sporadically, we witness protests, such as last night in Tehran, Kazerun and other cities,\u201d Khamenei said on Saturday, adding that 14 people, including security forces, have been killed since the demonstrations started.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere might be further escalations if the government cannot come up with concrete and practical actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protests on Saturday evening in Tehran were described as \u201climited\u201d by the semiofficial Fars news agency, which said they were \u201cgenerally made up of groups of 50 to 200 young people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran\u2019s population is about 10 million.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrations were reported in the districts of Novobat and Tehran Pars in the capital\u2019s east; Ekteban, Sadeghieh and Sattarkhan in the west; and Naziabad and Abdolabad in the south, Fars said.<\/p>\n<p>Riots reported in Malekshahi<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators shouted slogans that included \u201cdeath to the dictator\u201d, Fars said, adding no major incidents were reported beyond stone throwing and rubbish bins being set alight.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency said the situation in Tehran \u201ccontrasted with an intensification of violence and organised attacks in other regions, notably the country\u2019s west\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Malekshahi, a county in western Iran of about 20,000 residents, including a sizeable Kurdish population, a member of the security forces was killed in clashes, Iranian media reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRioters attempted to storm a police station,\u201d Fars said, adding that \u201ctwo assailants were killed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accounts of the protests in local media are not exhaustive, and state-run outlets have downplayed their coverage of the demonstrations while videos flooding social media are often impossible to verify.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Khamenei <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/3\/irans-khamenei-says-rioters-must-be-put-in-their-place-amid-protests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sent<\/a> a strong message in his first remarks on the demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talk to protesters. The officials must talk to them,\u201d Khamenei said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there is no benefit to talking to rioters.
