The Queensland government has revealed who will be responsible for designing and building the Victoria Park stadium ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n

The 63,000-seat stadium will be designed and built by Australian firms Cox and Hassell, which will team up with Japanese group Azusa Sekkei.<\/p>\n

The firms worked on Perth’s Optus Stadium and redeveloped the Adelaide Oval and the MCG.<\/p>\n

Earthworks are set to begin on the stadium by the middle of this year.<\/p>\n

The project is slated to cost $3.6 billion, part of a $7.1 billion plan to make Queensland’s sporting venues ready for the 2032 games.<\/p>\n

An exact site on Victoria Park has not yet been earmarked, but will be decided in the coming months. Victoria Park Golf Club will close before the first sod is turned.<\/p>\n

COX Architecture director Richard Coulson said Victoria Park would make a “stunning setting” for the stadium.<\/p>\n

“The importance of long views, capturing cooling breezes, and the essential provision of shade, all embody the relaxed way of life that Queenslanders cherish \u2014 qualities that are integral to our culture,” he said.<\/p>\n

The project has attracted opposition from local group Save Victoria Park, which staged a small protest in front of the QUT building where today’s media conference was held.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Government signs Brisbane 2032 Games funding plan<\/a><\/p>\n

The Commonwealth has agreed to contribute just under half the cost of building the 2032 Olympic Games venues, under a deal struck with the Queensland government.<\/p>\n

About half a dozen supporters arrived with printed signs.<\/p>\n

“This latest tranche of greenwashed computer imagery is not real,” said Save Victoria Park spokesperson Rosemary O’Hagan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“What’s real are the ancient trees, rolling hills, and native wildlife the government intends to obliterate for what could become one of history’s most environmentally disastrous Olympic Games.”<\/p>\n

When asked by journalists about the claims, Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie responded: “My response to Save Victoria Park? Loopy. Next question.”<\/p>\n

“Save Victoria Park are just a bunch of NIMBYs who don’t want anything to happen. This park \u2026 was a golf course. Before it was a golf course, it was a dump for goodness sake,” he said.<\/p>\n

After the 2032 Games, the stadium will host the Brisbane Lions and cricket, as well as entertainment events.<\/p>\n

The group has argued the project’s $3.6 billion price tag would blow out to $4.4 billion, under economic modelling.<\/p>\n

The decision to build the new stadium was the result of a 100-day independent review into venues, infrastructure and transport.<\/p>\n

Heritage listing expanded at proposed Olympic stadium site<\/a><\/p>\n

However, the heritage listing won’t do much, as the state government has already passed legislation which allows it to bypass planning laws for Olympic venues.<\/p>\n

The plans, released by the Premier in March, saw David Crisafulli declare Victoria Park a “clear” choice to host the 2032 games.<\/p>\n

Mr Crisafulli had made multiple promises not to build a new stadium before the 2024 state election.<\/p>\n

The Gabba, once flagged as a potential Olympic stadium, is set to be demolished after the Games to make way for urban renewal.<\/p>\n
