Photograph: Marcelo Garcia\/Miraflores press office\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a televised address earlier Rodr\u00edguez gave no indication she would cooperate with Trump, saying what was being done to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/venezuela\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venezuela<\/a> was \u201can atrocity that violates international law\u201d, referring to Trump\u2019s government as \u201cextremists\u201d and maintaining that Maduro was Venezuela\u2019s rightful leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But Trump warned later that if Rodr\u00edguez didn\u2019t fall in line, \u201cshe is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In other key developments:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rodr\u00edguez announced a commission to seek the release of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Maduro is in a New York detention centre awaiting a court appearance on Monday on drug charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Top officials in Maduro\u2019s government called the seizure of Maduro and his wife a kidnapping. \u201cLet no one fall for the enemy\u2019s provocations,\u201d interior minister Diosdado Cabello said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump\u2019s administration described Maduro\u2019s capture as a law-enforcement mission to force him to face US criminal charges filed in 2020, including narco-terrorism conspiracy. Photograph: Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Maduro\u2019s son, Nicol\u00e1s Ernesto Maduro Guerra, reportedly said his father\u2019s supporters were more resolved than ever to support Maduro and the ousted president would return. \u201cWe will take to the streets, we will convene the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump suggested Colombia and Mexico could also face military action if they did not reduce the flow of illicit drugs to the US, saying: \u201cOperation Colombia sounds good to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Images of the 63-year-old Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed stunned Venezuelans. The operation was Washington\u2019s most controversial intervention in Latin America since the invasion of Panama 37 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Venezuelan defence minister Gen Vladimir Padrino said on state television the US attack killed soldiers, civilians and a \u201clarge part\u201d of Maduro\u2019s security detail \u201cin cold blood\u201d. Venezuela\u2019s armed forces had been activated to guarantee sovereignty, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Cuban government said 32 of its citizens were killed during the raid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The governments of Spain, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay said in a joint statement the US actions \u201cconstitute an extremely dangerous precedent for peace and regional security and endanger the civilian population\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">All EU countries except Hungary issued a statement calling for restraint by \u201call actors\u201d and respect for the will of the Venezuelan people in order to \u201crestore democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">UK prime minister Keir Starmer said Britain was not involved in the attack but refused to condemn it. British cabinet minister Darren Jones \u2013 a close ally of Starmer \u2013 called for a peaceful transition of power in Venezuela to be reached \u201cquickly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump suggested the US would not push for immediate elections to install a new government but rather would work with remaining members of the Maduro administration to clamp down on drug trafficking and overhaul its oil industry.
