These days, \u201cGood Will Hunting\u201d co-writers Matt Damon<\/a> and Ben Affleck<\/a> do a film<\/a> together just about every few years, which means that Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Rip\u201d is arriving right on time. The action-thriller written and directed by \u201cSmokin\u2019 Aces\u201d filmmaker Joe Carnahan<\/a>, and starring the best-friend duo<\/a>, will release globally on the streaming platform in mid-January, foregoing a theatrical run.<\/p>\n

The logline for the film, which takes its name from a slang term for seizing illegal goods, reads: \u201cUpon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question \u2014 including who they can rely on.\u201d <\/p>\n

Joining Damon and Affleck\u2019s seasoned Miami officers \u2014 who, based on the just-released trailer, have plenty of life left in them \u2014 are younger cops played by Steven Yeun<\/a> and Teyana Taylor<\/a>, who is still collecting accolades for her performance in Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rip,\u201d which is said to be inspired by real events, is billed as a \u201cgritty, throwback action-thriller,\u201d but it more specifically invites comparison to stunt-heavy heist films like \u201cThe Fast and the Furious\u201d and corrupt-cop movies like \u201cTraining Day,\u201d which makes sense given Carnahan\u2019s breakout film was 2002\u2019s Ray Liotta-led \u201cNarc.\u201d <\/p>\n

The film, which marks the first collaboration between Netflix and Damon and Affleck\u2019s production company Artists Equity<\/a>, even comes complete with a femme fatale type, played by \u201cThe Flash\u201d star Sasha Calle, who gets mixed up with the swaggering team of cops when she\u2019s present at the raid.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rip,\u201d which releases on Netflix January 16, also features performances from Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Adkins, and Kyle Chandler.
