(AAP: Joel Carrett)

As for those paid the big bucks to forecast this kind of thing, the major bank economists are either expecting rate hikes starting in February or an extended hold.

NAB has pencilled in two 0.25 percentage point hikes, in February and May, while the CBA has forecast one hike in February.

Westpac and ANZ economists see an extended period of rates on hold, although ANZ does note a risk of a hike in early 2026, and Westpac sees risks on both sides.

What data is the RBA watching?

Inflation is the main game for the RBA, as maintaining price stability is central to its mandate, alongside full employment (which it defines as the current maximum level of employment that is consistent with low and stable inflation).

The central bank targets consumer price inflation between 2 and 3 per cent and uses data released by the ABS to track its progress.

“High inflation hurts everyone” was a refrain of the governor as the RBA raised rates through 2022 and 2023 in an effort to get price rises back under control.

In December, after delivering what was viewed as a hawkish hold — that is, keeping the cash rate steady but putting a potential hike firmly on the table — Ms Bullock said the RBA would be watching incoming inflation data to determine if inflation pressures were persistent or temporary.

“If inflation continues to be persistent and looks like it is not coming back down towards the target, then I think that does raise questions about how tight financial conditions are and the board might have to consider whether or not it’s appropriate to keep interest rates where they are or in fact at some point raise them,” she said.

Loading…

Ms Bullock didn’t put a timeline on when the RBA might be satisfied it had seen enough data to make a call on inflation, saying it will be a “meeting-by-meeting decision”.

The ABS will release the monthly consumer price index (CPI) for November tomorrow, Wednesday, January 7.

The December CPI will be released at the end of the month on Wednesday, January 28.

As for employment data, labour force figures for December are due on Thursday, January 22.

The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3 per cent in November, but employment fell, which some analysts said could give the RBA “pause for thought” on the state of the jobs market.

When does the RBA monetary policy board meet this year?

The RBA’s interest-rate-setting monetary policy board meets eight times a year, with meetings starting on a Monday afternoon and concluding on a Tuesday afternoon.

The board’s cash rate decision is released at 2:30pm Sydney time (currently, AEDT).

In 2026, its decisions are scheduled for:

February 3March 17May 5June 16August 11September 29November 3December 8RBA’s quandary: To hold or to hike?

The Reserve Bank governor has opened the door to interest rate hikes in 2026, but how soon will she walk through it?

An hour after the decision, Michele Bullock delivers a press conference and takes questions.

The decision is accompanied by a statement from the board, which is pored over by economists and market watchers even if there is no change to the cash rate, for any indication of which direction rates may be heading in.

The minutes of the meeting are released a fortnight later, providing more detail on what the board members discussed.

What’s happening with home loan and savings rates?

The RBA’s moves are of major interest to Australian households, of course, because they affect what we are charged to borrow money or earn on our savings.

Talk of rate cuts buoyed property prices in 2025, but 2026 has begun with rate hike chatter. (ABC News: John Gunn)

Comparison site Canstar crunched the numbers on what a 0.25 percentage point rate hike would do to existing borrowers’ minimum monthly mortgage repayments.

For loans between $600,000 to $1 million, the estimated impact ranges from $90 to $150 a month.

According to Canstar, the average variable rate for existing owner-occupiers is 5.51 per cent.

Meanwhile, fixed rates sit at an average of 5.1 per cent for owner-occupiers taking out a new loan for three years or less.

However, fixed rates have been on the way up.

“The shift in cash rate expectations is being felt across the market, with a run on fixed rate hikes in December,” Canstar’s data insights director Sally Tindall said.

“Canstar data shows 43 lenders hiked at least one fixed rate last month, including three of the big four banks.”

Ms Tindall expects “the vast majority of banks — if not all” to pass on the full 0.25 percentage point increase to borrowers if the RBA does hike in February.

The implication of savings rates is less clear, however.

“When rates were on the rise across 2022 and 2023, what we saw was banks picking and choosing which savings accounts got a boost and which missed out,” she said.

The average ongoing savings rate sits at 3.07 per cent, Canstar data shows, but Ms Tindall said savers could find rates that start with a ‘4’ if they shopped around.

The RBA’s first meeting of the year is a month away, but that doesn’t mean interest rate watchers…

[5
64,63,99,14821,51500,5465,5626,14819,49446,43014,7054,16776,5627
post-393999","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-business","tag-cash-rate","tag-home-loan-rates","tag-inflation","tag-interest-rates","tag-michele-bullock","tag-rate-cut","tag-rate-hike","tag-rba","tag-reserve-bank","tag-savings-rates
["GET
