{"id":396383,"date":"2026-01-07T00:32:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T00:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/396383\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T00:32:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T00:32:07","slug":"the-cdc-is-changing-its-vaccine-recommendations-but-n-j-says-its-sticking-to-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/396383\/","title":{"rendered":"The CDC is changing its vaccine recommendations, but N.J. says it\u2019s sticking to science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DM6UYMHKEFEERFSLQHLA2PCKBY\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may have reduced the number of routine shots it recommends, but New Jersey has no plans to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"POSTUGXLIND2LLRXKSOFACCKNM\">On Monday, the CDC announced revisions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/cdc-acts-presidential-memorandum-update-childhood-immunization-schedule.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/cdc-acts-presidential-memorandum-update-childhood-immunization-schedule.html\">U.S. childhood immunization schedule<\/a> that cut the number of recommended shots from 17 to 11. The new guidance is controversial, but it isn\u2019t expected to affect access in New Jersey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3GNUFBVBPFC47P53OQGR7TM2MQ\">Although certain vaccines are no longer recommended for all children, all vaccines covered by the previous immunization schedule will still be available to anyone who wants them through Affordable Care Act insurance plans and federal insurance programs, including Medicaid, the Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program and the Vaccines for Children program, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/fact-sheet-cdc-childhood-immunization-recommendations.html#:~:text=for%20All%20Children-,The%20CDC%20will%20continue%20to%20recommend%20that%20all%20children%20are,international%20consensus%2C%20as%20well%20as\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/fact-sheet-cdc-childhood-immunization-recommendations.html#:~:text=for%20All%20Children-,The%20CDC%20will%20continue%20to%20recommend%20that%20all%20children%20are,international%20consensus%2C%20as%20well%20as\">federal government<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FMWT553FSJD6LBAR6YZ5K75XWI\">The CDC continues to recommend vaccines for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), Pneumococcal conjugate, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, human papillomavirus (HPV) and chickenpox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5Y2WK4MPBZA5DPXW2NN5NWOLZI\">However, vaccination for the following diseases is now recommended only for high-risk groups or based on shared clinical decision making: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), hepatitis A, hepatitis B, dengue, meningococcal ACWY, meningococcal B, rotavirus, meningococcal disease, COVID-19 and influenza. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3KGUL6BW6BHTBF6U6MA4UQSMXE\">The changes were made at the request of President Donald Trump, who has previously said that the U.S. requires too many childhood vaccines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y43UIKQKTVBQRMPU2WODDTRKRU\">In spite of the new guidance, health care providers in New Jersey can continue to vaccinate children according to the previous immunization schedule if that\u2019s what their patients prefer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GTS4BMB2JRAGBE2ISLH27USNNE\">Under the new guidance, \u201cnon-consensus\u201d vaccines can still be given based on a shared clinical decision between physicians and parents, who know the child best.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Y3CNADZK2ZFJJLDPYBPNLJEY6Y\">The CDC\u2019s recommendations won\u2019t affect<a href=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/health\/cd\/documents\/imm_requirements\/k12_parents.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/nj.gov\/health\/cd\/documents\/imm_requirements\/k12_parents.pdf\"> school immunization requirements<\/a> either. States and local jurisdictions, not the federal government, set vaccine requirements for schools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"A5SIXUWEN5FHPOOC2WZTKV4UNI\">\u201cThe New Jersey Department of Health will continue its commitment to protecting the health of children, families, and communities across the state through evidence-based recommendations,\u201d the state\u2019s Acting Health Commissioner Jeffrey A. Brown said Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IKC2DXKFKZFATERQWIPKZ2VS3Y\">\u201cOur public health guidance and vaccine policies will remain grounded in the best available science and centered on access,\u201d said Brown in a press release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VFHOAFWMRJGJ3NUXCT3LPJAOA4\">Although the CDC\u2019s recommendations aren\u2019t expected to affect vaccine access, New Jersey has taken precautionary steps to ensure availability and control vaccine messaging. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R5HF36Z7ZZAMDNKL67OCJBF4WM\">In September, New Jersey joined six other states in forming the Northeast Public Health Collaborative, a regional public health coalition that aims to bring together public health agencies to share expertise and resources. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S3U23ZT7BVEC5AGU4W2VZQDFGI\">The next month, Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/phil-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/topic\/phil-murphy\/\">Phil Murphy<\/a> joined 14 other Democratic governors in creating a public health alliance to facilitate cross-state collaboration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PDZABCYYT5B6HOFLYNDBUSGR2M\">There\u2019s also a proposed bill in the New Jersey Legislature that would give greater authority to the state Department of Health regarding vaccine recommendations. The bill wouldn\u2019t eliminate the CDC or its vaccine panel as trusted authorities, but rather expand the number of medical organizations New Jersey turns to for vaccines guidance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MBNOEM3N6VAKVJSJU3V4UT4V6Y\">The bill states that in making recommendations on vaccines, the state Department of Health would consider the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, as well as the following organizations: the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Physicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BOWAMLAL4RDOPFOMOKRD3IAHXM\">It would also require insurers to cover the vaccines that the Department of Health recommends. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PTZTXFNJSJHCZGX7TD6Y723XFA\">The legislation doesn\u2019t mandate vaccines or eliminate religious exemptions, said state Sen. Joseph Vitale, D-Middlesex, chairman of the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee and the bill\u2019s primary sponsor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RWNAVXQQUJHYXO5PLPPU7KRKXU\">\u201cThis bill doesn\u2019t take away the ability for parents to make decisions for their children \u2014 when they get the vaccine, if they get the vaccine, which ones they\u2019d like them to have \u2014 it doesn\u2019t change any of that,&#8221; said Vitale during a Dec. 22 hearing at the Statehouse in Trenton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JNF3ZQYQE5BBTJMGIBAGPMS3HE\">Vitale said that parents like him will still \u201chave the ability to tell my pediatrician that I don\u2019t want my children to have vaccine or that vaccine.
