{"id":397058,"date":"2026-01-07T08:11:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T08:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/397058\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T08:11:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T08:11:07","slug":"china-bans-export-of-dual-use-items-to-japan-amid-tensions-over-taiwan-military-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/397058\/","title":{"rendered":"China bans export of dual-use items to Japan amid tensions over Taiwan | Military News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Japan calls for the ban\u2019s withdrawal, calling the measures \u2018absolutely unacceptable\u2019 and \u2018deeply regrettable\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"avatar\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/author\/powerj\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/jp-1730786685-rotated.jpg\"   aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Published On 7 Jan 20267 Jan 2026<\/p>\n<p>Click here to share on social media<\/p>\n<p>share2<\/p>\n<p class=\"rich-share__social-text\">Share<\/p>\n<p>China has unveiled new export controls on Japan amid elevated tensions over Taiwan, prompting a rebuke by Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s Ministry of Commerce said it had banned so-called dual-use items, with military applications, in light of Japan\u2019s \u201cerroneous\u201d and \u201cegregious\u201d statements about the self-governing island, which Beijing considers its territory.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday, the Commerce Ministry said the ban was intended to \u201csafeguard national security\u201d and would apply to all items that could \u201cenhance Japan\u2019s military capabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The notice did not specify which goods would be banned.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that it had issued a protest with China and demanded the withdrawal of the measures.<\/p>\n<p>Masaaki Kanai, the secretary-general of Japan\u2019s Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, told the Chinese Embassy\u2019s deputy chief of mission, Shi Yong, that the ban was \u201cabsolutely unacceptable\u201d, deeply regrettable\u201d, and did not comply with international practice, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>China and Japan have long been at odds over historical and territorial issues, but relations deteriorated sharply after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested late last year that Tokyo could intervene militarily if China attacked Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>In remarks to parliament in November, Takaichi said that a Chinese attack on Taiwan would be a \u201csurvival-threatening situation\u201d for Japan, meeting the threshold to exercise the right of collective self-defence under the country\u2019s war-renouncing constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese leader\u2019s remarks infuriated Beijing, which has long pledged to unify Taiwan with the Chinese mainland, using force if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>In his annual New Year\u2019s address, Chinese President Xi Jinping called the \u201creunification\u201d of China and Taiwan \u201cunstoppable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Xi made the remarks days after China\u2019s military wrapped up live-fire drills that simulated a blockade of the island.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s governing Democratic Progressive Party considers the island a de facto independent country, though it has not formally declared independence.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan elects its leaders and has its own military, passport and currency, but is not officially recognised by the vast majority of countries, including Japan.<\/p>\n<p>China insists that countries do not recognise Taipei if they wish to maintain diplomatic ties with Beijing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Japan calls for the ban\u2019s withdrawal, calling the measures \u2018absolutely unacceptable\u2019 and \u2018deeply regrettable\u2019.
