England captain Ben Stokes has left the field having suffered an apparent groin injury on day four of the New Year\u2019s Ashes Test against Australia at the SCG<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old, who has been England\u2019s best bowler on the tour, was halfway through his 28th over of the innings when he suddenly pulled up sore, relaying his final instructions to his teammates before gingerly limping off the ground. Young all-rounder Jacob Bethell completed the over.<\/p>\n

The England captain later confirmed Stokes was being assessed for a right abductor complaint.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will provide an update when more information is available,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

Stokes is expected to bat during England\u2019s second innings, but he will not be permitted a runner. It\u2019s also unclear whether he will hobble out at No. 6 or No. 11.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he might be cooked,\u201d former England bowler Isa Guha said on Fox Cricket commentary.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a warrior cricketer, he worked so hard to get himself fit for this series. It hasn\u2019t gone his way, he\u2019s had to really put in with bat, with ball, as captain \u2013 and it\u2019s finally tolled in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Australian legend Adam Gilchrist continued: \u201cWe wondered whether this would happen at some point \u2013 and the disappointment on the face tells you.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a big effort from this man to get through all five Test matches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Test batter Mark Waugh added: \u201cThat\u2019s been worrying him all tour, that groin.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a shame, he\u2019s tried his guts out the whole tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stokes has taken 15 wickets at 25.13 this summer, including a five-wicket haul during the series opener in Perth. He missed the fifth and final match of last year\u2019s Test campaign against India due to a shoulder injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is why I\u2019m doubling down on what I\u2019ve said about (England\u2019s) preparation leading into a Test series,\u201d former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee said on Kayo Sports\u2019 live Ashes coverage.<\/p>\n

\u201cFast bowlers have to be able to bowl all five Tests, simple as that.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Test cricket, a test of your endurance and pain threshold, it\u2019s hard work and England\u2019s bowlers have tried their hardest, there\u2019s no doubt about it.<\/p>\n
