{"id":397960,"date":"2026-01-07T17:31:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/397960\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T17:31:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:31:10","slug":"christian-petzolds-miroirs-no-3-trailer-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/397960\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian Petzold&#8217;s &#8216;Miroirs No. 3&#8217; Trailer \u2014 Watch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>German filmmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/christian-petzold\/\" id=\"auto-tag_christian-petzold\" data-tag=\"christian-petzold\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Petzold<\/a> once again asks his current favorite leading lady, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/paula-beer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paula-beer\" data-tag=\"paula-beer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paula Beer<\/a>, to embody a woman dazed by trauma and taken in by the promise of romance \u2014 or at the very least, a bit of doting \u2014 with his latest dreamy feature, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/lists\/best-films-of-2026-already-seen\/marc-by-sofia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miroirs No. 3<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaving behind the more literal geopolitical trauma of films like the Beer-led \u201cTransit\u201d or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/afire-paula-beer-christian-petzold-nina-hoss-1234883489\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nina Hoss-led \u201cPhoenix,\u201d<\/a> Petzold\u2019s new drama centers on two women who cling to each other in the fallout of an accident. Laura (Beer), a pianist from Berlin, is begrudgingly accompanying her boyfriend on a work trip when a violent car crash instantly kills him and leaves her concussed on the side of the road. She\u2019s then taken in by Betty (\u201cThe State I Am In\u201d star Barbara Auer), who witnessed the crash while painting the white picket fence outside of her isolated country home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/awards\/results\/art-directors-guild-nominees-2026-full-list-1235171615\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"0\" data-post-id=\"1235171615\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MCDONBA_WB020.jpg\" alt=\"ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, Chase Infiniti, 2025. &#xA9; Warner Bros. \/ Courtesy Everett Collection\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235153200\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/the-batman-part-2-everything-we-know-sequel-1235171486\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-card-index=\"1\" data-post-id=\"1235171486\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Sebastian-Stan-The-Batman-Part-II.png\" alt=\"(Left to right): Sebastian Stan in &quot;Thunderbolts&quot; (2025) and Robert Pattinson in &quot;The Batman&quot; (2022)\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235171490\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>As if Laura is the prodigal daughter returning home, the two women quickly fall into a familiar routine that bears obvious signs of something stranger, including Betty immediately volunteering her real child\u2019s bed and clothes to the total stranger. As seen in the IndieWire-exclusive trailer for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/film\/\" id=\"auto-tag_film\" data-tag=\"film\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">film<\/a> below, the feeling that there\u2019s something odd about the way the women are carrying on is underscored by the arrival of Betty\u2019s estranged husband (Matthias Brandt) and son (Enno Trebs), who are varying degrees of horrified and comforted by Laura\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n<p>While Beer\u2019s role in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/miroirs-no-3\/\" id=\"auto-tag_miroirs-no-3\" data-tag=\"miroirs-no-3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miroirs No. 3<\/a>\u201d is the polar opposite of the flighty seductress she played in Petzold\u2019s 2023 drama \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/afire\/\" id=\"auto-tag_afire\" data-tag=\"afire\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Afire<\/a>,\u201d the film itself has a similarly vague quality, where suffering goes largely unspoken and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/afire-christian-petzold-interview-1234884392\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landscape and interiors do much of the talking<\/a>. When the feature, which was named for a Ravel solo piano composition, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/criticism\/movies\/mirrors-no-3-review-christian-petzold-1235121824\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IndieWire\u2019s Ryan Lattanzio described it<\/a> as \u201ca minor-key new drama, which burrows into the psyche despite its slim running time and almost perverse refusal to explain itself or the shapes its narrative takes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The airy, enigmatic film makes sense as the successor to \u201cAfire,\u201d given that it\u2019s understood to be the last in a trilogy that also includes \u201cUndine.\u201d Each work in the trilogy is built around Beer and an element, with \u201cUndine\u201d drawing on water and \u201cAfire,\u201d obviously, pulling from flames. Though Petzold wasn\u2019t clear what element would shape his newest film when he started out, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/interviews\/christian-petzold-cannes-mirrors-no-3-paula-beer-interview-1235123152\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as he told IndieWire<\/a>, he was struck by inspiration during a pre-production set visit with his stars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were visiting this house, sitting on this porch. Really storming winds were coming, and during the whole shooting, this stormy wind never stops. We had the hairs from Paula, and the others, always totally disturbed, the trees always in motion,\u201d Petzold said. \u201cThis could be that nature says, \u2018This is the third part of the trilogy. It\u2019s wind, air, and now it\u2019s gone: You can [proceed] with a new one.\u2019 I was sitting there on the porch, smoking a cigarette, and said, \u2018OK, this is the end of the trilogy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiroirs No. 3\u201d releases the film in U.S. theaters on March 20.
