Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner concedes the controversial catch call in their defeat to Melbourne Renegades was right by the letter of the law, but not in spirit.<\/p>\n

Renegades youngster Ollie Peake was given a reprieve in the dying stages of their final-ball thriller at Optus Stadium on Wednesday night because the third umpire overruled an on-field decision which sent him packing on 16. Just three overs later, the teenager hit a six to win the game off the final ball.<\/p>\n

Turner took the ball high above his head at mid-off, but the video umpire decided he had grounded the ball in his right hand while landing.<\/p>\n

The Scorchers skipper said he agreed with the decision by the letter of the law, but was left frustrated by the rule. He said it is difficult for every scenario in the game to be covered by regulations because its lawmakers are \u201csitting in offices, not people out throwing themselves around in the outfield\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Renegades won by four wickets after the Scorchers posted 126. A win would have put them on top of the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the incident, I didn\u2019t know I\u2019d put the ball on the ground, right, and it\u2019s really frustrating because I think for everyone who is a cricket person, or watched cricket or played cricket in the backyard knows that\u2019s a catch, that\u2019s out, right,\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s the letter of the law, that\u2019s what the playing conditions state so the officials have made the right decision. We don\u2019t dispute that, but it\u2019s just one of those frustrating parts of the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rules and regulations are written by people sitting in offices, not people out throwing themselves around in the outfield, so sometimes I get it, it can be hard to have every scenario captured within the playing conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s frustrating because we were on the wrong end of it tonight, but that\u2019s not the thing we are going to sit back and talk about in our team meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The on-field umpires spent minutes discussing the call even after the decision had been put on the stadium\u2019s big screen, whipping a furious crowd into a frenzy.<\/p>\n

Turner revealed those talks surrounded whether or not a run should be awarded \u2014 which it ultimately was \u2014 or if the incident should be called a dead ball.<\/p>\n

He said he disagreed with the decision to award the Renegades a run.<\/p>\n

But the considered veteran cricketer also said he empathised with the \u201crelatively inexperienced\u201d umpires in the high-pressure situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re under pressure as players out there. Umpires are professionals as well, they\u2019re under pressure as well and they knew that,\u201d Turner said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of eyes watching them so I feel for them and empathise for them in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
