The partnership will not last. All of a sudden the top half of Australia’s order is gone and England sense an opportunity. Labuschagne drops to his knees; he knows how unfortunate this is. He’d raced off for a single only for Carey to spy danger and turn around. Marnus is left in no man’s land. Potts hot potatos the ball back near the stumps and Jamie Smith smashes them straight away.

Green back under the spotlight now.

1.45pm

WICKET: Khawaja dismissed

He drags Tongue onto his stumps and that’s the end of the veteran’s international Test career. It’s slightly unlucky, and Khawaja will be disappointed. But he must be at least a little relieved to be finished, finally. After all the conjecture and back and forth, and external commentary on what he should do.

Thanks Uzzy #419 is emblazoned in white on the pitch, and he drops to his knees next to it to touch his head to the turf. Then his bat is in the air as he receives one final farewell.

Carey comes out and takes two runs from Tongue in what Australia will hope is a sturdy partnership that gets the job done.

1.45pm

Bethell drops Labuschagne

He goes in for a drive but ends up edging towards gully. It’s got pace in the air but so does Bethell. He gets there and you think he has it, until Bethell can’t hold on to it.

England have not been short on chances so far this innings. Not short at all. And they will wish Bethell had gotten rid of Marnus because he saunters into the next over and takes three fours and two twos off Jacks, making the (well-performing here) bowler the owner of the most expensive over this Test (16 runs).

1.38pm

Uzzie off the mark with a boundary

It’s a lovely sweep to fine leg, offset by a nervy moment four ball later when Stokes dives and is not a million miles away from catching the veteran out on four. Instead the ball slips through and he adds another two runs.

Australia 3-102 (Labuschagne 20, Khawaja 6) after 20 overs, need 58 runs to win

1.28pm

Khawaja has another shot at a fairytale ending

He makes his way out for his last Test innings (again). England’s players and the umpires form a guard of honour. He blocks Jacks’ final delivery of the over.

1.25pm

WICKET: Smith can’t believe he’s out

He’s looking at the stumps that have just buckled behind him, and back up the crease to where Jacks has just flummoxed him with off-spin, then back again to the stumps as if he surely hasn’t just been bowled. But he has, and that is his lot on 12 runs.

Guess who’s coming now ..

1.19pm

Well hi there Marnus!

A six if you don’t mind. He shimmies forward and takes Jacks on the half-volley for a crisp shot over long.

Australia 2-83 (Labuschagne 15, Smith 4), Australia need 77 runs

1.12pm

Players are back out there for session two

Tongue is bowling to Smith.

12.41pm

Lunchtime view from the ground

Australia lose Jake Weatherald on the stroke of lunch to another good short ball from Josh Tongue, but will have their refreshments needing only another 89 runs from two sessions for a 4-1 series ledger.

England had some reason to be miffed about Snicko when they applied to get Weatherald a little earlier, but not for the first time they’ve bowled far too short and wide with the new ball.

Steve Smith is in next for Australia, but is the scene being set for one final innings from Usman Khawaja?

Jake Weatherald leaves the field.Credit: AP

12.34pm

WICKET! Weatherald bites the dust

He manages to defend Tongue, and slashes a short one. Seems safe for lunch. But he is not safe! It’s the fourth ball of the over and it’s a bouncer. And he is confused and has the yips, and a top-edge sends the ball towards fine leg. Potts races after it and dives for a terrific catch!

Gone for 34. They’ll go straight to lunch before the over is out, meaning Smith has time before returning to the crease.

Australia 2-71 (Labuschagne 7, Smith 0), need 89 runs

Most Viewed in Sport

Loading

Sydney Ashes Test day five LIVE: Australia vs England fifth Test day 5 cricket scores, results, start time,…

[564
64,63,740,85
0":"post-398853","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cricket","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-cricket","11":"tag-sports
["GET
