But experts say this is not unexpected, and like other medications used to treat biological conditions, long-term use is recommended.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ozempic is one of the new published in the British Medical Journal and finds people who stop using one of the <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/national\/the-who-endorses-ozempic-and-other-glp-1s-for-obesity-australia-s-pbs-doesn-t-20251202-p5nk2l.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GLP-1 agonist<\/a> family of blockbuster weight loss drugs regain weight faster than those who have used conventional diet programs.<\/p>\n<p>Ceasing the drugs, which <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2025.10.30.25339120v1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">half a million Australians<\/a> are estimated to be on, results in an average weight gain relapse of 400 grams a month, \u201cand all weight lost [is] likely to be regained in under two years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a ffXaNQ\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Weight regain happens almost four times faster after stopping the drugs than it returns for those who have used diet and physical activity changes alone to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>The paper, a meta analysis of 37 studies with a combined 9341 participants with overweight or obesity, found effects such as reduced cholesterol and blood pressure were reversed after medication stopped and diabetes and heart disease risks were predicted to return to pre-treatment levels within two years.<\/p>\n<p>The drugs, known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/national\/what-is-ozempic-and-why-is-there-a-shortage-of-it-20221128-p5c1wb.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">work<\/a> by mimicking a natural gut hormone, stimulating insulin release, slowing stomach emptying and reducing appetite.<\/p>\n<p>This reduces blood sugar, produces weight loss and has shown in many studies to have protective <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/4tv9na56\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">benefits for the heart, kidneys and liver and various health conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney University endocrinologist Associate Professor Samantha Hocking said the research finding was in keeping with her expectations because obesity, like conditions including high blood pressure and high cholesterol, is a biological condition.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a that is solely personal responsibility, we know there are biological drivers in weight regain in response to losing weight,\u201d Hocking said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things bodies do when we lose weight is increase hunger hormones and lower satiety hormones, driving increased appetite and hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without the ground-breaking medications, which almost all Australian patients <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/csm9wsu3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">must still pay for privately at a cost of up to about $700 per month<\/a>, people\u2019s bodies respond to weight loss with biological strategies to recover it.<\/p>\n<p>Hocking said the more significant story reflected in the research was the wide-ranging health benefits of the new medications.<\/p>\n<p>The paper stated that \u201cthese new weight management medications (WMMs) have been shown to lead to notable short-term improvements in liver fibrosis, renal outcomes, and sleep apnoea and in reduced incidence of cardiovascular disease\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recent trial showed that continuous use of semaglutide [Ozempic\/Wegovy] over four years reduced major cardiovascular disease events in individuals with existing cardiovascular disease,\u201d the authors stated.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/smc.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=fdc5316d8cbd7a248ee94eaeb&amp;id=60ef476678&amp;e=521b7f2166\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Associate Professor Dominika Kwasnicka, <\/a>a behavioural scientist and public health researcher at the University of Melbourne, said the findings did not suggest weight-loss medications do not work, but highlighted that medications act on biological pathways and do not establish behavioral or systemic changes.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a has important policy implications,\u201d she said. \u201cAccess to these medications is expanding, often with substantial out-of-pocket costs and limited structured follow-up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese results support the need to embed pharmacotherapy within comprehensive, long-term models of care that include behavioural support, continuity of care, and realistic discussions about duration of treatment, rather than viewing these medications as short-term solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s authors found it is common for people using the medications to stop taking them within the first year, which shows \u201cthe need for caution when it comes to short-term use of weight loss drugs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Garron Dodd, head of the metabolic neuroscience laboratory at the University of Melbourne, said the study reinforced that while the GLP-1 drugs had changed the conversation around treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, it also demonstrated they are not a silver bullet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are a very exciting start, and we must not be deflated [by the finding that weight returns when people stop the drugs].
