{"id":399643,"date":"2026-01-08T11:43:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T11:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/399643\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T11:43:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T11:43:07","slug":"sophia-sammons-dominates-womens-u23-time-trial-at-australian-road-national-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/399643\/","title":{"rendered":"Sophia Sammons dominates women&#8217;s U23 time trial at Australian Road National Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"d5e1d116-1650-43dd-ad9e-085eef527cb0\">Sophia Sammons (Praties) rolled off the ramp last at the U23 women&#8217;s Australian time trial title on Thursday and quickly started chipping away at the times of her rivals, widening the gap on each of the three laps around Bold Park in Perth.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Sammons completed the 29.3km race against the clock at the Westbridge Funds <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/auscycling-road-national-championships\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/auscycling-road-national-championships\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Road National Championships<\/a> with a time of 40:22.42, which put her 55 seconds ahead of her nearest rival Sophie Marr (Liv AlUla Jayco Continental).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"d5e1d116-1650-43dd-ad9e-085eef527cb0-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Mackenzie Coupland, who has this year moved up to the WorldTour <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-womens-worldtour\/2024\/liv-alula-jayco\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-womens-worldtour\/2024\/liv-alula-jayco\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liv AlUla Jayco <\/a>squad, was third, 1:10 back from Sammons.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just insane, I knew how much work I put into it, I knew I put everything out onto the course today,\u201d said Sammons. \u201cTo be rewarded with this result is really, really good. Crossing that line was such a big relief.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The competition unfolded over three laps of the 9.8km circuit with a relatively flat start that includes a hairpin turn and climbs that deliver just over 100m of elevation gain a lap. It was a course Sammons was particularly familiar with, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/my-main-ticket-to-really-getting-my-name-out-there-sophia-sammons-on-chasing-a-chance-at-home-australian-road-national-championships-in-perth\/\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/womens-cycling\/my-main-ticket-to-really-getting-my-name-out-there-sophia-sammons-on-chasing-a-chance-at-home-australian-road-national-championships-in-perth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">making the most of her home town advantage<\/a> by training on the circuit on the run-in to her target event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy team and I had a plan that we stuck to, we really wanted to control the first lap and see how it was going on the second lap and then go balls to the wall on the final lap, that\u2019s exactly what we did.
