Plans to build a new railway station north of York remain on track, according to a city MP, and a key milestone is likely to happen within weeks.<\/p>\n
A contractor is due to be appointed to the Haxby Station scheme later this month, the LDRS understands.<\/p>\n
After the project had seemed to be in doubt, confirmation of the funding for the \u00a324m project was confirmed last July.<\/p>\n
York Outer MP Luke Charters said this had provided certainty that the project had needed for years.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWorking alongside the mayor and council, we put forward a strong case and secured investment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m in regular contact with ministers about this crucial scheme for communities in the north of York and am assured the scheme remains on track.\u201d<\/p>\n
Network Rail\u2019s spokesperson said it would be able to share an updated programme for the project, including a potential timetable for works, once a contractor is appointed.<\/p>\n
The delivery of the station is subject to further\u00a0planning approvals and funding decisions.<\/p>\n
The Department for Transport\u2019s spokesperson said their decision to make money available to the scheme would help support sustainable and accessible transport north of York and beyond.<\/p>\n
Haxby Station will bring an estimated roughly 20,000 more people within 3km of a rail station, according to Government data.<\/p>\n
Officials said last year it would help provide easy access to York and Leeds and and open up a wealth of opportunities for work, leisure and travel.<\/p>\n
York and North Yorkshire Mayor David Skaith said following July\u2019s announcement that it was now time for spades in the ground.<\/p>\n
