(Supplied: CFA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Emergency warnings continue for numerous communities as a bushfire near Longwood in central Victoria burns through nearly 30,000 hectares, with <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-08\/bushfire-victoria-south-australia-heatwave-australia\/106210436\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106210436\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homes in the small town of Ruffy feared to have been lost<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Emergency warnings are also in place for a bushfire burning in north-east Victoria in the Mt Lawson National Park, near Walwa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dozens of towns surrounding these fires have been told to evacuate, as authorities predict dry lightning strikes may cause additional blazes in other parts of Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The CFA said lightning had already caused multiple fires north of Orbost in East Gippsland on Thursday night, with an advice warning in place for surrounding towns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Forest Fire Management deputy incident controller Dave Jensen said forecast thunderstorms were expected to increase the potential for dry lightning, which could result in further ignitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said these were conditions that had not been seen since the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Longwood fire\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767904030_180_5081217180e67674ede61103321c3f65.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Longwood fire had grown on Thursday to nearly 30,000 hectares. Don&#8217;t try to find short cuts because you could end up driving straight into a fire front,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Victorian electricity distributor Powercor has strongly urged customers to plan ahead for today&#8217;s extreme weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Powercor network emergency manager Steve Rigoni said the forecast winds and lightning could damage electricity assets.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about heatwaves in Australia:<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Tomorrow&#8217;s conditions are among the most severe we&#8217;ve faced in a long time. We&#8217;ll be operating our network on highly sensitive settings to reduce the risk of starting fires.
