Afterwards, Barrett dined privately with the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">In Barrett, New Zealand Rugby (NZR) was presenting one of its biggest superstars to the organisation\u2019s newest sponsor \u2013 Chicago-based Gallagher Insurance, a global firm with a US$72 billion ($124b) market cap and 70,000 employees, including in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"All Black playmaker Beauden Barrett, in Chicago ahead of this weekend's test match against Ireland. Photo \/ All Blacks<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Gallagher has earned a spot on the All Blacks\u2019 playing shorts by way of a lucrative new sponsorship agreement that was pulled together at relative breakneck speed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/sport\/rugby\/all-blacks\/new-zealand-rugby-reach-settlement-with-sponsor-ineos\/JOMTRMVUVZC2RJFU3AWCJZIAUY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/sport\/rugby\/all-blacks\/new-zealand-rugby-reach-settlement-with-sponsor-ineos\/JOMTRMVUVZC2RJFU3AWCJZIAUY\/\">following the unilateral decision by British firm Ineos<\/a> to pull out of its long-term sponsorship, citing financial pressures globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Sitting front row on Monday night, listening intently to Barrett was Gallagher president, chief executive and board chairman J. Patrick (Pat) Gallagher jnr, the grandson of Arthur James Gallagher, who formed the business in 1927.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Pat Gallagher is a powerful American businessman, leading the world\u2019s third-biggest insurance broker. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Gallagher president, chief executive and board chairman J. Patrick (Pat) Gallagher Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">He explained why he ultimately signed off on the All Blacks and NZR deal and why the values of the team struck home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m a strong believer that culture, in my opinion, is probably one of, if not the leading ingredients to the success or failure of any human enterprise,\u201d Gallagher told the Herald, shortly before sitting down to break bread with Barrett.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI would say that includes your family. I\u2019ll say that to people, and they look at me like \u2018what?\u2019 I go, \u2018yeah, how\u2019s the dinner table?\u2019 and they get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">He said that as he grew older, he firmly believed success was based on an \u201cunwritten code of conduct\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHow you are going to behave yourself among each other and be able to call each other out: \u2018That\u2019s not our culture, don\u2019t do that\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen you see that and believe it like I do, then you\u2019re looking for things that align culturally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Gallagher referred to a comment Barrett had made minutes earlier to the small gathering about what being an All Black meant to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou heard them talking today \u2013 I put this jersey on [and] all these people came before me. I love the fact &#8211; I never knew until tonight \u2013 that they have their number. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s really cute. \u2018I\u2019m [All Black number 1115] and proud of it.\u2019 I get the fact that in New Zealand, every kid wants to play for the All Blacks and their families are proud of them. Photo \/ Andrew Cornaga \/ Photosport<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">The monetary details of the Gallagher deal have not been revealed, but it is understood that the terms of the arrangement \u2013 alongside a similar new sponsorship deal with Toyota, and NZR\u2019s out-of-court settlement with Ineos \u2013 have more than covered the $21 million hole left by Ineos for this year.<\/p>\n<p>How did the Gallagher deal come together?<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">The Gallagher deal was pulled together rapidly, within a matter of a fortnight \u2013 an astounding feat considering the cautiousness with which big corporates usually respond, especially in a still-tight global economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">The Herald understands that NZR chairman David Kirk and Gallagher\u2019s Auckland-based Australasian boss Steve Lockwood \u2013 Gallagher was once the Crombie Lockwood firm in New Zealand \u2013 were instrumental in talking first before they and the NZR leadership team took the proposal to Gallagher head office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">In Chicago, the pitch landed perfectly with Gallagher chief marketing officer Chris Mead, who has been pivotal himself in a significant number of major sports sponsorships for the firm over the past decade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">He travelled to New Zealand to help sign the new sponsorship.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Gallagher chief marketing officer Chris Mead.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Gallagher chief marketing officer Chris Mead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cKirky was incredibly important,\u201d said Mead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe\u2019ll be spending time with our leadership team on Thursday. The NZR leadership team understand business. The conversations with him \u2013 we probably talked during those negotiations 20 or 30 times before it got done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">It is understood Beauden Barrett was a critical cog in the deal, with Kirk and NZR chief executive Mark Robinson identifying him as the ideal ambassador for the company. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"David Kirk (left) and Mark Robinson. Photos \/ Getty Images Artwork, Herald graphics<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Gallagher has a number of former rugby players on its staff, including ex-Wallaby Tim Horan and Scotland\u2019s Nathan Hines, who MCed the event in Chicago on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Mead consulted them both over the potential All Blacks partnership \u2013 they did not hesitate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Mead said having Barrett as an ambassador was a \u201cnatural decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe might as well be a Gallagher employee,\u201d says Mead, who played golf with Barrett and other All Blacks in Chicago at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe hope we take lots of these players and help them find a career path after, but I feel like Beauden could be sitting in the office right next to me. He just fits with us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cKirky and Mark kind of knew, knowing our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The All Blacks perform the haka at Soldier Field in Chicago in 2016. Photo \/ Photosport<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Mead confirmed there were some performance-based incentives as part of the partnership, although he would not go into detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere are a few of those, and we love those. I mean, we all have performance-based incentives, right? We do, and the team should too. I think there should be more of that. We want our teams in the playoffs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Gallagher is involved with numerous Major League Baseball teams \u2013 including the Chicago Cubs \u2013 as well as football and ice hockey franchises. It has the naming rights to English premiership rugby, and this weekend\u2019s All Blacks-Ireland test match at Soldier Field.<\/p>\n<p>The new town square<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">In an age of social media, Mead is a strong believer that sports \u2013 through stadiums and teams \u2013 are the modern-day equivalent of the town square, where old-school community principles still exist. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cInternationally, obviously, as we continue to grow as a company, we are going to invest in sport that is relevant to the community,\u201d said Mead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe are not trying to paint the world with Gallagher blue &#8211; it\u2019s a mosaic and every community, every country has a different passion. We look for things that are relevant to that culture in that community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">He says Gallagher\u2019s NZR partnership \u2013 the initial deal runs until the end of 2027 \u2013 was a \u201cno-brainer\u201d but he also acknowledges it was a \u201cfast negotiation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou know, when someone comes to us with a problem and they\u2019ve had a fire in their building, we don\u2019t say, \u2018Okay, let\u2019s give it a year and then we\u2019ll work with you\u2019. They need help now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cDon\u2019t take that analogy too far. I\u2019m not saying New Zealand Rugby was on fire by any stretch, but if we can help now and we can engage and we can align, we\u2019re going to do that.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Mead also says Gallagher is not a passive partner. \u201cIf we\u2019re going to go in all in, we\u2019re going to go all in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Respect on the field<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Pat Gallagher says the sponsorship was \u201cnot just about putting a name on a billboard and selling more insurance &#8211; believe me, we\u2019re into that\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">But such deals also helped create a community, where what goes around comes around. \u201c[It\u2019s] this whole pulling the whole community together, supporting us and us supporting them that really makes it long-lasting.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Pat Gallagher also loves the respect that rugby players have for each other and officials on the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf you\u2019ve ever listened to a rugby game \u2013 you\u2019ve listened to a lot of them \u2013 when it comes to the refs, it\u2019s \u2018Gentlemen, I\u2019ll have no more of that\u2019; \u2018Yes, sir\u2019. <\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWell, they don\u2019t mic up the NBA for a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Gallagher's name appears on the All Blacks' shorts - will it one day appear on the jersey?\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Gallagher&#8217;s name appears on the All Blacks&#8217; shorts &#8211; will it one day appear on the jersey?<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Would Gallagher want its logo on the front of the All Blacks jersey one day?<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAt the right price, you bet,\u201d Pat Gallagher says. \u201cRight now, I\u2019m happy with the bum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Shayne Currie travelled to Chicago with assistance from New Zealand Rugby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vUWuwjCGukMuO\" style=\"display:none\">Editor-at-Large Shayne Currie is one of New Zealand\u2019s most experienced senior journalists and media leaders.
