Late-night hosts expressed outrage over the fatal shooting<\/a> of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE)<\/a> officer in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/a> opened Thursday\u2019s Late Show on a somber note, following the killing of Good<\/a>, a 37-year-old mother of three, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning. \u201cIt\u2019s a senseless yet entirely predictable tragedy,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cAnd our hearts go out to Renee Good\u2019s loved ones, friends and the community where it happened.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cBy now we\u2019ve all seen the video,\u201d he continued, referring to multiple videos shot by witnesses which show Good\u2019s car appearing to turn away from the officer, who then fires shots into the side of her vehicle as she drove.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sure looks like a federal agent gunned down an American citizen without cause in front of witnesses on a city street,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cBut the administration is telling you that you didn\u2019t see that. They\u2019re saying that you saw him respond to an act of domestic terrorism. They\u2019re telling you to believe them and not your eyes. And they told you that immediately, before there was any investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert noted that Good\u2019s killing was in fact the ninth ICE shooting since September. \u201cSo this feels less like an anomaly and more like a trend. You don\u2019t watch the ninth Fast and Furious movie and think \u2018you know, I\u2019m beginning to get the sense that Vin Diesel really cares about family.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the FBI assumed full control<\/a> of the investigation, blocking Minnesota officials from accessing all evidence related to the case. \u201cSo the message from this administration is clear: only they determine the truth, and when their forces come to your city, obey or die. And if you die, you clearly didn\u2019t obey,\u201d said Colbert.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis should be an alarm bell for the entire country, whether you live in a red state or a blue state,\u201d he concluded. \u201cBecause if we let this go on, regardless of who your state voted for, one day you\u2019ll have unaccountable armed government agents acting with impunity in your town. So peacefully, and non-violently, please let your leaders know you don\u2019t want that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seth Meyers<\/p>\n

On Late Night, Seth Meyers<\/a> connected Wednesday\u2019s ICE shooting and the torrent of untruths<\/a> that followed from the administration with Trump\u2019s broken promises on immigration.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s not forget everybody, Trump lied from the jump about the scope and focus of his mass deportation program during the 2024 campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cTrump said he would crack down on violent criminals, drug dealers and gang members \u2013 unless you beat up a police officer on January 6th, or your gang is a rightwing militia that stormed the Capitol, or you\u2019re a financial criminal who swindled Americans out of millions, or you\u2019re a Honduran drug kingpin who flooded America with cocaine.\u201d<\/p>\n

But instead of focusing on violent criminals, the Trump administration has \u201cblanketed the country with federal agents, disrupting neighborhoods, Home Depots, 7\/11s and even schools\u201d. Meyers played recent footage of ICE agents at Roosevelt high school in Minneapolis, where they hit students with pepper spray and arrested two US citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis behavior is lawless and out of control,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd on top of that, most of the detained migrants have no criminal record. In fact, more than 170 US citizens have been caught up in the ICE dragnet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump administration lied about their deportation plan, and now they\u2019re lying about the ICE shooting in Minneapolis,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe Trump team knows that what we can all see with our own eyes is indefensible, which is why they have to lie about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking just hours after the incident, Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, called Good driving in her car on the way home from dropping her kid at school \u201can act of domestic terrorism\u201d in which she \u201cattacked [ICE agents] and those surrounding them and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a blatant lie contradicted by the video evidence we can all see with our own eyes,\u201d Meyers retorted.<\/p>\n

The host conceded that none of this was remotely funny monologue material. \u201cThese days suck. Trying to find a way to talk about the world we live in with levity sucks so much,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I do think it\u2019s important to finish with this: a 37-year-old mother in a Honda Pilot was shot dead on a residential street, and they\u2019re calling her a terrorist. The same people who called those who stormed a federal building heroes, the same people who supported pardoning those who beat Capitol police officers while ignoring their orders to stop, are telling that a woman shot dead in her own car, in her own community, is a domestic terrorist. And when they do that, they are also telling us who they are. And it is our job to never forget what they told us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel<\/p>\n

\u201cTerrible things happen every day,\u201d said Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> on Thursday evening. \u201cSad things happen, tragedies, cruelty, injustice, et cetera. And in most situations, it\u2019s just a bad part of life.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what do you do when something terrible happens and a big group of people, including those who are running our country, tells you it didn\u2019t? They tell you you\u2019re not seeing what you clearly see. Are you supposed to just accept it and move on, go about your day? What do you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel then encouraged viewers to watch the video of an ICE agent shooting Good in her car for themselves. \u201cIt\u2019s important for us to know what happened, and what is happening, because if we don\u2019t, it\u2019s definitely going to happen again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lamenting days when \u201cthere used to be a baseline of decency\u201d, Kimmel called out \u201cthe full force of the White House and the commentators who have decided that their job is to support anything and everything their leader says or does, trying to convince that a mom who just dropped her six-year-old off at school was part of a leftwing terror effort\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis woman, this unarmed mama \u2013 a devout Christian, by the way \u2013 who had no criminal record, driving a Honda Pilot trying to get away from armed men in masks in the snow, masked men who are screaming at her. We\u2019re to believe this woman was a terrorist committing a terrorist act? And the fact that ICE shot through her windshield three times, that was her fault?\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Noem, the ICE officer was \u201cfollowing his training\u201d. To which Kimmel responded: \u201cHow stupid do you think we are? That is not just an insult to Renee Good. That\u2019s an insult to every law enforcement officer everywhere. They\u2019re not trained to do that. Again, I encourage you to watch the video for yourself.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd by the way, I know it isn\u2019t easy to work in law enforcement,\u201d he added. \u201cI get that people make mistakes in the heat of a situation, but don\u2019t try to tell me that went by the book. Apologize, investigate, let justice be served.
