Heavy rainfall across Perth has wreaked havoc as floodwaters trapped people inside their cars and inundated houses.<\/p>\n

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services rescued two people from their vehicles in Claremont after they were trapped in a flooded railway underpass.<\/p>\n

The drivers were trying to pass through the Shenton Road underpass quickly became stuck just after 10.30am.<\/p>\n

A DFES spokesperson said a woman had been successfully retrieved from her car just after 11am, but it took fireys much longer to free the second person who was trapped in the other car.<\/p>\n

It is understood neither are injured.<\/p>\n

Further south in Mandurah, three homes on Beam Road were inundated with water.<\/p>\n

Mandurah resident Jay told The West, local kids were making the most of the bad situation on Moat Street.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy street was flooded due to the heavy downpour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came from work this morning expecting it to be flooded and there (were) some local kids playing in a kayak in the flood waters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jay revealed Moat Street is often victim to flash flooding as a result of its \u201cfrustrating\u201d drainage system.<\/p>\n

Perth was lashed with rain through Saturday morning as a cold front passed through the south-western part of WA.<\/p>\n

As the strong winds battered the coast, Fremantle local Colin Regan\u2019s life flashed before his eyes as he sat in his car at Port Beach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis morning I sat in my car watching the waves . . . and I heard this cracked behind me, this loud crack,\u201d Mr Regan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I turned around I saw that the 30-foot-high concrete lamp post had fallen down . . . if I parked a few metres behind the car would\u2019ve been destroyed and it would\u2019ve killed me for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

The overnight rain flooded community ovals and golf courses, cancelling a number of sports matches on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The Royal Perth Golf Club had to rush keen golfers off the green just before midday after the fairway flooded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe course will be closed today after this morning\u2019s heavy rain,\u201d the club posted via its Facebook page.<\/p>\n

The Wanneroo City Soccer Club is also among many who have cancelled all Saturday matches due to the \u201cstate of (their) pitches\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith no sign of the rain easing up, all today\u2019s games at Wanneroo are postponed,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The Forrestfield Bowling Club have joked about offering swimming lessons at the facility after the rain left their lawn resembling a pool.<\/p>\n

\u201cBowls have been cancelled for this afternoon,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, if interested water polo can be arranged, alongside swimming lessons.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bureau of Meteorology said a second, stronger cold front is due on Sunday, bringing with it damaging winds and thunderstorms.<\/p>\n

Just before 4pm on Saturday BoM recorded 16.8mm of rain in Perth since 9am. A larger 23mm was recorded near Serpentine, and just 6.6mm in Mandurah despite the flash flooding.<\/p>\n

Wind gusts of up to 50km per hour were recorded in Ocean Reef and up to 56km per hour on Rottnest Island.<\/p>\n

The State Emergency Services team responded to 32 calls since midnight Friday. The majority of calls came from the Mandurah and Secret Harbour regions with reports of water ingress, flooding and roof damage.<\/p>\n

DFES have issued coastal hazard advice for the Perth metropolitan area, the south west and parts of midwest Gascoyne.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to act now and stay safe with severe weather forecast including damaging surf from Sunday morning,\u201d the warning said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLocations which may be affected include Bunbury, Mandurah, Jurien Bay, Lancelin, Rottnest Island, Yanchep, and City of Perth beaches.\u201d<\/p>\n

WHAT TO DO<\/p>\n

If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.Keep away from coastal areas including beaches, tidal rivers, creeks, cliff areas and sand dunes.Beach closures may be in place.
