{"id":404252,"date":"2026-01-10T13:39:45","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T13:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/404252\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T13:39:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T13:39:45","slug":"vale-athol-webb-melbourne-mourns-premiership-hero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/404252\/","title":{"rendered":"Vale Athol Webb | Melbourne mourns premiership hero"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                Club Update\n            <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__summary\">\n                Two-time premiership Demon Athol Webb has passed away, aged 90.\n            <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">THE MELBOURNE Football Club is saddened to hear of the passing of dual premiership player Athol Webb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Webb played 74 games and kicked 146 goals for the Demons between 1955 and 1959, becoming a member of one of the most successful eras in the club\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne Football Club President, Steven Smith, paid tribute to Webb\u2019s contribution to the red and blue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of everyone at the Melbourne Football Club, we extend our condolences to Athol\u2019s family, friends and former teammates.\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAthol\u2019s contribution to our Club and to the game will always be remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAthol was a much loved member of a remarkable generation at Melbourne and someone who played his role with great humility and selflessness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recruited from Tasmania, Webb developed into an important forward under legendary coach Norm Smith, forming a strong partnership with Bob Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Webb played a key role in Melbourne\u2019s 1956 premiership, kicking five goals in the Grand Final victory over Collingwood.<\/p>\n<p>He again featured in the 1957 premiership side, kicking three goals in the Grand Final against Essendon, and led the club\u2019s goal kicking in both 1957 and 1958.<\/p>\n<p>Webb was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2006, named a Hero of the Melbourne Football Club in 2008, and made a Life Member in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Club Update Two-time premiership Demon Athol Webb has passed away, aged 90.
