Despite being the franchise star and league-leading scorer for the Los Angeles Lakers, legends of the team aren’t happy with Luka Doncic.<\/p>\n
Luka Doncic<\/a> is the new franchise star for the Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>, and while he hasn\u2019t yet played a full season for the team, his offensive impact is impossible to deny.\u00a0<\/p>\n However, not everyone has been a fan of Doncic in his 11-month tenure with the Lakers, specifically a few of their franchise legends. Most recently, three-time Finals winner with Los Angeles, Robert Horry<\/a>, called out Doncic for what he said was \u2018hunting\u2019 for fouls.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cHis game is predicated on getting fouls called, and the refs don\u2019t give him a call, he starts hunting even more to try to prove the refs wrong,\u201d Horry said on a recent Spectrum SportsNet broadcast of a Lakers game<\/a>. \u201d You\u2019re too good of a basketball player to hunt for fouls.\u201d<\/p>\n Robert Horry rips Luka for foul baiting<\/p>\n \u201cHis game is predicated on getting fouls called, and the refs dont give him a call, he starts hunting even more to try to prove the refs wrong. You\u2019re too good of a basketball player to hunt for fouls.\u201cpic.twitter.com\/wi0WMR8FV3<\/a>\n<\/p>\n \u2014 Lakers Daily (@LakersDailyCom) January 10, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n On the season, Doncic is averaging a league-leading<\/a> 12 free-throw attempts per game, 2.1 ahead of Deni Avdija<\/a>, and 2.8 ahead of the so-called \u2018free-throw merchant<\/a>\u2018 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a>. Doncic is also putting up a league-leading 33.3 points per game<\/a>, along with eight rebounds and 8.8 assists on 45.8% shooting.<\/p>\n Lakers Legends Call Out Luka Doncic<\/p>\n While his offensive game has been a revelation for the Lakers this season, as seen with the aging LeBron James<\/a> and the injured Austin Reaves<\/a>, Doncic has been continuously called out for his play style through the first two and a half months of the NBA<\/a> season.\u00a0<\/p>\n Along with Horry\u2019s comments, another Laker legend, five-time champion James Worthy<\/a>, had similar thoughts on the new star in December.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he\u2019s searching for calls. He\u2019s not getting \u2019em,\u201d Worthy said last month, according to LakersDaily.com<\/a>. \u201cJust come out, play a little more aggressive. Don\u2019t look for the fouls. Play the game.\u201d<\/p>\n James Worthy on Luka’s 35: “It’s funny how Luka can have this type of stat line and then it still not be noticed\u2026because it wasn’t impactful. \u2026 It wasn’t a dominant performance. It was a good stat line, but it didn’t really have a phase on the game.”<\/p>\n \u2014 Lakers Daily (@LakersDailyCom) December 11, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n While Gilgeous-Alexander previously took the brunt of the criticism<\/a> for hunting fouls in the NBA, Doncic has now come under more scrutiny for trying to go to the foul line. Although he is still a top-tier offensive player, as seen, who has the ability to lead a team to the postseason, criticism has grown with the Lakers\u2019 recent struggles, including their losses in their last two games and six of their last ten.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n The team\u2019s defense remains the bigger issue<\/a>, but with Reaves out and James back and forth <\/a>from the injury report, Doncic has held an outstretched responsibility for head coach JJ Redick\u2019s team<\/a> over the past few games.\u00a0<\/p>\n He most recently fouled out of the Lakers\u2019 loss<\/a> to the Milwaukee Bucks<\/a>, a contest in which James was stopped twice<\/a> in a row by Giannis Antetokounmpo<\/a>. So, while former players and fans might not love his style and continued efforts to go to the free-throw line, that might be the team\u2019s best chance at winning, for now, at least.<\/p>\n Luka Doncic Involvement In Dennis Schroder Suspension<\/p>\n Aside from his \u2018hunting for fouls\u2019 criticism, Doncic has most recently been in the news for the part he played in Dennis Schroder<\/a> of the Sacramento Kings<\/a> being handed a three-game suspension<\/a> by the NBA.\u00a0<\/p>\n According to ESPN, Schroder was suspended three games for \u2018confronting and attempting to strike\u00a0Luka Doncic after the Kings\u2019 loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Dec. 28.\u2019<\/p>\n The two got in multiple arguments throughout the contest, but reportedly, after the game, in which the Lakers won, Schroder attempted to find Doncic in the tunnels of the Crypto.com Arena long after the final buzzer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \u201cForty minutes after the buzzer, Schroder went after Doncic, telling Doncic that he can\u2019t call him a [expletive] on the court and pretend everything is fine off the court. The NBA concluded that Schroder attempted to strike Doncic,\u201d Anthony Slater wrote for ESPN.<\/a><\/p>\n Additionally, Lakers center Deandre Ayton<\/a> reportedly tried to pull Schroder away in hopes of protecting his team\u2019s star guard.\u00a0<\/p>\n Los Angeles and Sacramento play against each other once again on Monday, but Schroder, for his confrontation with Doncic, will miss the contest, as well as the team\u2019s other two games against the Houston Rockets<\/a> and New York Knicks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n \n\t\t\tEli Gregorski<\/a> is a sports journalist covering the NBA for Heavy Sports.
