{"id":409094,"date":"2026-01-12T22:32:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T22:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/409094\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T22:32:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T22:32:07","slug":"michael-carrick-set-to-be-appointed-new-man-united-interim-boss-sources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/409094\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Carrick set to be appointed new Man United interim boss &#8211; sources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a data-clubhouse-guid=\"6ebc2fd0-35d3-733b-5666-b75035a3bce9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/team?id=360\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester United<\/a> are closing in on the appointment of Michael Carrick as their interim manager until the end of the season, sources have told ESPN.<\/p>\n<p>United are hoping to make a formal announcement in the next 48 hours with an expectation that Carrick will be available to take training at Carrington on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The first-team squad had already been given the day off on Tuesday before Sunday&#8217;s FA Cup third-round defeat to Brighton.<\/p>\n<p>Carrick held further talks with CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox on Monday after a first face-to-face meeting on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Ole Gunnar Solskjaer met Berrada and Wilcox on Saturday, but it appears the Norwegian has lost out to Carrick.<\/p>\n<p>United sources have dismissed suggestions that Solskjaer was ever the clear frontrunner of the job.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/>Michael Carrick is set for a return to the Manchester United touchline.\u00a0Getty<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/47582503\/with-no-manager-manchester-united-continue-sink-new-low\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8211; With no manager, Man United continue to sink to new lows<\/a><br \/>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/story\/_\/id\/47582549\/darren-fletcher-manchester-united-brighton-waste-quotes-fa-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darren Fletcher urges Man Utd players not to &#8216;waste&#8217; season after FA Cup exit<\/a><br \/>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/football\/report\/_\/gameId\/762498\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Man United knocked out of FA Cup by Brighton after Danny Welbeck strike<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sources have told ESPN that club bosses favour Carrick because he&#8217;s considered to be more of a hands-on coach.<\/p>\n<p>During Solskjaer&#8217;s spell in charge between 2018 and 2021, he delegated much of the on-field coaching to Kieran McKenna, now manager at Ipswich Town, and Carrick.<\/p>\n<p>Sources have said that Carrick&#8217;s personality and coaching qualities impressed senior players during his time at United and that the former England midfielder is favoured by some senior players at the club.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s set to be Carrick&#8217;s second spell in charge after a brief stint following Solskjaer&#8217;s dismissal in November in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>He led the team for three games before leaving the club following the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim boss.<\/p>\n<p>Talks over the make-up of Carrick&#8217;s backroom staff are ongoing. Jonathan Woodgate, who assisted Carrick at Middlesbrough, is one of the names in the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Carrick&#8217;s brother Graeme, who worked alongside Michael at Middlesbrough and previously worked for the English Football Association, is expected to have a role on the United backroom staff, if negotiations with Carrick reach a successful conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>United&#8217;s next game is against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
