Join now and get your first month for just $1 ><\/a><\/p>\nAustralia chose not to pick a back-up wicketkeeper for the T20 World Cup, with Josh Inglis set to go it alone, and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell on standby to be an emergency gloveman should the West Australian be ruled out at the last minute.<\/p>\n
Carey, 34, has remained in national selectors\u2019 thoughts in T20 cricket. Having not played for Australia in the format since 2021, he was brought back for four matches in the back-half of last year when Inglis was unwell and then injured.<\/p>\n
But Carey managed just 34 runs across three innings in those matches, unable to do enough to convince the panel that he warranted inclusion in the 15-man squad for the global event in India and Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Tuesday at a Woolworths promotional event in Melbourne, Carey seemed at peace with his lot, but by the same token said he had not given up hope on forcing his way back in T20 cricket, just as he has done in one-day cricket following his axing early in the 2023 World Cup.<\/p>\n
\u201cGreat to still be around that squad,\u201d Carey said. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m really clear on where I sit in that and that 15 man squad looks really strong, and the boys are playing some great Big Bash cricket leading into that, and a couple of guys are freshening up. So now for me, (I\u2019m) focused on tonight\u2019s game (for the Strikers against the Melbourne Stars), and then look forward to some cricket with South Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carey said he drew inspiration from former Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, who enjoyed a late career resurgence to play at several T20 World Cups in thirties and was pivotal to the Aussies\u2019 breakthrough win at the 2021 T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou never know. I think Matthew Wade, the way he came back in and had a real impact and ended up winning a World Cup for Australia, yeah, you never say never, and I\u2019ll continue to hopefully improve in all formats. If the opportunity comes up, I\u2019d love to,\u201d Carey said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI also understand, I\u2019ve had a lot of opportunity in that format, and I also understand where I sit now, with red ball and some one day cricket, some Sheffield Shield cricket. So yeah, for me, it\u2019s always trying to perform, always want to play cricket for Australia, but I also understand exactly where I sit, and the selectors have been amazing with their open and honest conversations. It looks like a really good T20 World Cup squad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carey said he was keen to play through the back half of the Shield season as South Australia seeks to defend its title.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think there\u2019ll be a little window at the end of the Big Bash leading into Sheffield Shield cricket for me (to rest),\u201d Carey said. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo we\u2019ll have a week or so to do that, but also understand it\u2019s a big summer. And for the South Australian cricketing group, we\u2019ve got the Sheffield Shield still there. Victoria the clear leaders in that at the moment. But for us, winning it last year, we\u2019re hungry to win some more games and hopefully find ourselves in that final. I\u2019m still really focused on what\u2019s ahead. And then end of season there\u2019s not too much.
