The Gascoyne town known for its big banana should perhaps consider a rebrand to a massive mango.<\/p>\n

Carnarvon mango growers are reaping the rewards of bigger crops this season, with harvests up on last year, and mangoes close to the size of a bowling ball.<\/p>\n

Gascoyne River Plantation owner Wayne Whitcroft last week harvested a mango he estimated weighed more than a kilogram.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Whitcroft said it was unusual the massive mango had ripened so early, and it was one of many huge mangoes in this year’s harvest.<\/p>\n

“There’s bigger ones there, but that one was just ripe hanging there,” Mr Whitcroft said.<\/p>\n

“There’s a lot of big number eights just sort of hanging everywhere this year.”<\/p>\n

While much of Australia has been sweating through heatwaves, Mr Whitcroft theorised good growing weather in the Carnarvon region could be behind the haul.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s probably the weather conditions, watering \u2014 and it’s an R2E2, and sometimes they are quite big,” Mr Whitcroft said.<\/p>\n

“Maybe with our fertiliser regime, we’ve just got a lot better, bigger crop.”<\/p>\n

While it might have made a good daiquiri or mango salad, Mr Whitcroft said he was not sure where the mammoth piece of fruit ended up.<\/p>\n

“We can’t find it, so I’d say the kids have cut it up already,” he said.Crops boost from last year\"A<\/p>\n

Shire of Carnarvon president and mango grower Eddie Smith said yields at his plantation were also tracking higher than last year, thanks to the ideal weather conditions.<\/p>\n

“The weather’s been exceptionally good this year for us,” Mr Smith said.<\/p>\n

“The quality is up on last year, and the numbers are up a little bit on last year, so the quantity is up as well.”<\/p>\n

Mr Smith said he was expecting a 50 per cent increase in yield over last season.<\/p>\n

“We’d be happy if we got about 15,000 trays \u2026 last year we did just over 10,000 trays,” he said.\"Mangoes<\/p>\n

According to the Australian Mango Industry Association, the Carnarvon region was tipped to produce 124,000 trays this season.<\/p>\n

That figure is up more than 30 per cent on the 2024\u201325 season, which saw 94,000 trays of mangoes harvested in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

High volume, lower prices\u00a0<\/p>\n

With a higher volume of fruit in the market, Craig Grant, a sales executive at Perth-based market agent Etherington, said it was a good time for consumers to purchase mangoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“At the moment, there’s a fair bit of fruit in the market,” Mr Grant said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Certainly \u2026 the marketplace at the moment, I would say is a very, very good time to buy mangoes.<\/p>\n

“And if you’re new to the fruit, certainly an opportunity to get in there without breaking the bank.<\/p>\n
