{"id":410882,"date":"2026-01-13T21:49:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T21:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/410882\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T21:49:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T21:49:11","slug":"patients-file-lawsuits-in-marion-county-over-glp-1-side-effects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/410882\/","title":{"rendered":"Patients file lawsuits in Marion County over GLP-1 side effects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chances are\u2014you or someone you know\u2014is taking a GLP-1 to lose weight.<\/p>\n<p>The popular medications are sold under names like Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound and Mounjaro.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768340949_534_.png\" alt=\"GLP1s2.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"689\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WRTV<\/p>\n<p>        GLP-1 drugs<\/p>\n<p>In a week-long series, WRTV Investigates is digging into the benefits and costs associated with these medications.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wrtv.com\/news\/wrtv-investigates\/all-the-rage-indiana-patients-discuss-the-growing-popularity-and-price-of-glp-1-drugs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">On Monday, WRTV Investigates dug into the benefits<\/a> and financial costs associated with GLP-1 drugs.<\/p>\n<p>The medications also come with possible side effects, including losing muscle mass, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.<\/p>\n<p>Sue Seyfert considers herself lucky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never had any side effects,\u201d said Seyfert.<\/p>\n<p>The Indiana native is one of millions of Americans taking GLP-1s, a class of medications used to treat diabetes, obesity, heart disease and other health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768340950_873_.png\" alt=\"SueSeyfertKara.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"734\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WRTV<\/p>\n<p>        Sue Seyfert takes GLP-1 medications for her diabetes<\/p>\n<p>Sue takes Ozempic for diabetes, not for weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Schmelz, an associate professor of pharmacy practice at Butler University, said gastrointestinal side effects are common among users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost patients will experience some kind of stomach-related side effect like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation,\u201d said Schmelz. \u201cThat\u2019s fairly typical for medications that work like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also points GLP-1 drugs have a black box warning for thyroid tumors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The drugs have been found to increase the risk of thyroid tumors in mice,&#8221; said Schmelz. &#8220;Because of that, we definitely recommend patients use caution who have a family history or a personal history of thyroid cancer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>WRTV Investigates found dozens of patients claiming they\u2019ve suffered serious side effects from taking GLP-1 drugs.<\/p>\n<p>In the past few months, court records show dozens of lawsuits filed by patients in Marion County against Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk, the Danish maker of Ozempic and Wegovy.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768340950_641_.png\" alt=\"NovoNordiskEliLilly.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"724\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk\/WRTV<\/p>\n<p>        Novo Nordisk\/Eli Lilly<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuits claim the companies downplayed side effects like gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach has trouble emptying itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendants have downplayed the nature, duration, extent, and seriousness of gastrointestinal events and failed to warn about other adverse events caused by their GLP-1Ras,\u201d read one lawsuit filed by Terry Smith of Indiana on July 31, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Smith claimed a result of using Ozempic, Trulicity, and Victoza, he suffered from gastroparesis, debilitating vomiting, debilitating abdominal pain, and required emergency medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s seeking damages from Eli Lilly, which manufactures Trulicity, and Novo Nordisk, which makes Ozempic and Victoza.<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s lawsuit and similar lawsuits allege instead of warning consumers about losing muscle, \u201cLilly has instead invested in developing combination drugs to combat the muscle loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s lawsuit and similar lawsuits filed in recent months are still pending, records show.<\/p>\n<p>WRTV Investigates reached out to Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Zepbound and Mounjaro, as well as Novo Nordisk.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768340951_803_.png\" alt=\"MounjaroZepbound.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"542\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WRTV<\/p>\n<p>STATEMENT FROM ELI LILLY\u201cLilly is committed to making life better for people living with diabetes through developing medicines like Mounjaro and Trulicity that change the way healthcare providers can treat this disease. Novo Nordisk remains confident in the benefit-risk profile of our GLP-1 medicines, when used consistent with their indications and product labeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drug companies are making big bucks from GLP-1 medications.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.lilly.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/lilly-reports-third-quarter-2025-financial-results-highlights-rd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eli Lilly reported their revenue<\/a> in Q3 2025 increased 54% to\u00a0$17.60 billion\u00a0driven by volume growth from Mounjaro and Zepbound.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768340951_31_.jpeg\" alt=\"Eli Lilly\"  width=\"640\" height=\"480\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WRTV photo <\/p>\n<p>        Eli Lilly and Company Indianapolis headquarters. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. regulators last month gave the green light to a pill version of the blockbuster\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/weight-loss-pill-obesity-ozempic-wegovy-2c0f852513994226af456166f65b5e82\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weight-loss drug Wegovy<\/a> made by Novo Nordisk, the first daily oral medication to treat obesity.<\/p>\n<p>Sales of semaglutide, sold as Wegovy for obesity and Ozempic for diabetes, continued to rise in the third quarter and together brought in more than 51 billion Danish kroner, or about $7.9 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk also <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.novonordisk.com\/content\/nncorp\/global\/en\/news-and-media\/news-and-ir-materials\/news-details.html?id=916445\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported a 12% increase in sales<\/a> in the first nine months of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday on WRTV News at 6 pm, WRTV Investigates is digging into the financial links between pharmaceutical companies and Indiana doctors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chances are\u2014you or someone you know\u2014is taking a GLP-1 to lose weight.
