{"id":411533,"date":"2026-01-14T04:31:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T04:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/411533\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T04:31:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T04:31:12","slug":"cuckoos-nest-cherished-childrens-store-in-bicton-to-close-doors-amid-cost-of-living-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/411533\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuckoo\u2019s Nest: Cherished children\u2019s store in Bicton to close doors amid cost-of-living crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Parents in Perth\u2019s south have been left devastated after a popular children\u2019s store announced it would be closing amid the rising cost-of-living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The Cuckoo\u2019s Nest Kids Store, located in the Melville Plaza Shopping Centre on Canning Highway, has been a popular children\u2019s store for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The retailer shared the sad news that it would be closing in February in a social media post last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cAfter a lot of thought, we\u2019ve made the decision to close The Cuckoo\u2019s Nest,\u201d the store said in a statement to customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThis little shop has been part of our lives for a long time and we\u2019re incredibly grateful for the support, chats and loyalty from our community over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThank you for being part of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Owner Teresina Pearson told PerthNow that the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest was born in Fremantle but the current Bicton storefront had been open for 12 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cI\u2019ve always loved the world of kids\u2019 toys, gifts and clothing \u2014 it\u2019s very creative, playful and so joyful to work in,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cAustralia has such a strong kids\u2019 brand scene and I might be biased but it always felt like there was no shortage of beautiful, creative labels to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/5a8e0cfcb4fbf6cfbc4b63d3d58995ea8f131822.jpg\" alt=\"Owner Teresina Pearson (pictured) said she loved seeing the children stare at the window displays and seeing posts of kids in outfits from her store. \" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconOwner Teresina Pearson (pictured) said she loved seeing the children stare at the window displays and seeing posts of kids in outfits from her store.  Credit: Hawaiian Melville Plaza<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Ms Pearson revealed the store closure was prompted by the cost-of-living crisis and the rising dominance of online retailers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a tough few years \u2014 costs have risen, people are spending less and more shopping is happening online,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cWhile I also have an online store, it\u2019s difficult to compete with big brands and large retailers who dominate that space. For small independent shops, it all adds up over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cI loved the work but it became harder to keep going in a way that was sustainable, so closing is the right decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Although the decision was difficult, Ms Pearson said the outpouring of support she has received from the Bicton community has \u201cmeant a great deal\u201d to her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">\u201cThe response has been very kind \u2014 I haven\u2019t replied to everyone yet as it\u2019s been a bit emotional so I want to respond properly, but it\u2019s really shown how much the shop has meant to people over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ff6cc71edabba2f41f8da184cac738a55164baac.jpg\" alt=\"The Cuckoo\u2019s Nest\u2019s closure was prompted by increasing prices and competing online retailers. \" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconThe Cuckoo\u2019s Nest\u2019s closure was prompted by increasing prices and competing online retailers.
