The Yankees<\/a> paid a big price Tuesday to trade for a hard-throwing starting pitcher who missed most of last season with two injuries.<\/p>\n

To bring in left-hander Ryan Weathers, the Yankees gave the Marlins four prospects, including three ranked among their top 30 in MLB Pipeline\u2019s list<\/a> \u2014 outfielders Brendan Jones (No. 15) and Dillon Lewis (No. 16) and infielder Dillon Jasso (No. 23). Shortstop Juan Matheus also is headed to the Marlins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a power arm with swing-and-miss stuff,\u201d an MLB scout told NJ Advance Media. \u201cI saw Weathers get up to 96 (mph) last season. But they sure gave up a lot to get a depth piece. That\u2019s a steep price. Wow!\u201d<\/p>\n

The scout, who was granted anonymity because he\u2019s not permitted by his club to speak publicly, added, \u201cThe biggest question with this guy is, \u2018Can he stay healthy?\u2019 Durability is going to be the main thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weathers, 26, was limited to eight starts last season while going 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. He was sidelined from March 27 to May 14 with a flexor strain and on the IL from June 9 to Sept. 11 with a lat strain.<\/p>\n

He also was sidelined in 2021 with an ankle injury and was on the 60-day IL in 2024 with a finger strain.<\/p>\n

In five MLB seasons, Weathers is 12-23 with a 4.93 ERA in 70 games, 55 as a starter. He\u2019s struck out 235 over 281 innings.<\/p>\n

The Loretto, Tennessee, native was picked seventh overall in the 2018 draft by the Padres, then was traded to the Marlins on Aug. 1, 2023, for infielder Garrett Cooper and right-handed pitcher Sean Reynolds.<\/p>\n

With Yankees starters Carlos Rodon, Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt beginning 2026 on the IL, Weathers figures to compete in spring training for one season-opening rotation spot along with fellow southpaw Ryan Yarbrough.
