Once employers submit their payroll data, the figures for previous months are belatedly updated.<\/p>\n<p>Loading<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFiring the Commissioner &#8230; when the BLS revises jobs numbers down (as it routinely does) threatens to destroy trust in core American institutions, and all government statistics,\u201d Arin Dube, an economist at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, said on X. \u201cI can\u2019t stress how damaging this is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McEntarfer\u2019s sacking follows a well-established pattern by which Trump dismisses poor economic news as \u201cfake\u201d and asserts without evidence that the data has been manipulated by his political enemies. The commissioner is the only presidential appointee at the Bureau of Labour Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer noted the commissioner had been confirmed by the Senate in 2024 with bipartisan support, 86 votes to eight, including the vote of Vice President JD Vance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a classic Donald Trump,\u201d Schumer said, accusing Trump of acting like a Soviet dictator. \u201cWhen he gets the news he doesn\u2019t like, he shoots the messenger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Loading<\/p>\n<p>Schumer said the revised figures were bad news for the economy, and the president should take responsibility. \u201cFiring her isn\u2019t going to relieve the chaos that you\u2019ve created with your ramshackle tariff regime,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShooting the messenger isn\u2019t going to make the jobs that we\u2019re losing in healthcare and clean energy \u2013 because of your so-called big, beautiful bill \u2013 come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though the unemployment rate ticked up from 4.1 per cent to 4.2 per cent, it remains low and within the same 0.2 percentage point band it has been in for more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative political adviser Oren Cass, of American Compass, criticised Trump\u2019s move, and said it made the employment data seem much worse than it really was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president should not fire someone for delivering bad news, especially when the someone is a public servant and the news is public data.
