Even the most inactive teams have time to salvage their winter.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the reason behind the languid pace of free agency this winter &#8212; the collapse of regional sports networks, labor uncertainty, an active strategy to squeeze players as camp approaches or some combination of the lot &#8212; the reality, particularly for teams playing at the top of the market, is that this might be their last opportunity to land a front-line bat in free agency for years.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of the next two free agent classes features a hitter as attractive as Tucker, Bichette or Bellinger. And with the acquisition cost for trades enormous, it reinforces the leverage the remaining bats hold. Miss out on Tucker, Bichette or Bellinger, all of whom cost only cash, and the ability to recover could be severely mitigated absent breakout seasons from any of the above.<\/p>\n<p>There is time, and it&#8217;s what teams are banking on to resolve their winters, but it&#8217;s ticking fast. Tucker is going to move soon. Bichette might not be far behind. And they&#8217;re the sort of signings that can take a team that needs to make a move and level it up to a winter winner..<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752936309_868_greyline.png\" width=\"100%\"\/>Teams winning the offseason<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768401250_203_bal.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Being the most active team doesn&#8217;t always connote the best. In the case of the Orioles, however, the magnitude of their changes significantly upgraded a roster in sore need of an overhaul. And considering they might not be done, they&#8217;re aiming to be the second consecutive American League East team to go from worst to first.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>The acquisitions have come in almost every form. Big free agent signing? Big trade? Check: Right-hander <a data-player-guid=\"f8e374bd-6292-ad17-87d2-b80650a25588\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39639\/shane-baz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shane Baz<\/a> for a cadre of prospects. Bullpen help? Considering the misery of last season, though, president of baseball operations Mike Elias has filled the cupboard for new manager Craig Albernaz.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/chc.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Cubs thrust themselves definitively onto this list over the last week, locking up <a data-player-guid=\"b28542aa-30be-6851-75c4-501226976e1c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34886\/alex-bregman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Bregman<\/a> on a five-year, $175 million contract days after acquiring right-hander <a data-player-guid=\"de267d58-fbaf-a33a-4842-526ae031aec5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/40944\/edward-cabrera\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Cabrera<\/a> from Miami. Prior to that, Chicago had spent its winter outlet-mall shopping, signing four relief pitchers for around $30 million combined and bringing <a data-player-guid=\"20300b38-5f61-9fa2-ba49-d941487505db\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32161\/tyler-austin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Austin<\/a> back from Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Considering Chicago&#8217;s reticence to spend in recent years &#8212; including last winter with Bregman &#8212; the $35 million-a-year commitment to Bregman is a welcome return to the Cubs not acting like they&#8217;re run by St. Helen of the Blessed Shroud. The deal represents the largest per-year salary in Cubs history and is their biggest signing, in terms of potential impact, since adding <a data-player-guid=\"a9e20706-bf92-824a-4790-b34084fa353e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/28487\/jon-lester\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Lester<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"5535d809-a893-011e-9a42-4d1cff80b7c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/29551\/jason-heyward\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Heyward<\/a> more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Between Tucker last year and Cabrera this year, the Cubs have chipped away significantly at their prospect depth. That&#8217;s the sort of thing teams trying to win don&#8217;t shy away from doing. And after losing to the Brewers again in the NL Central race as well as the division series, Chicago will carry its highest-ever Opening Day payroll (currently around $225 million) &#8212; and perhaps even get over this year&#8217;s $244 million competitive-balance tax threshold.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768401251_451_tor.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Urgency is paramount in Toronto after the Blue Jays&#8217; heartbreaking World Series loss to the Dodgers. In a free agent market where high-end pitching continues to linger, Toronto jumped it and guaranteed $210 million for seven years of <a data-player-guid=\"297b8292-2f88-4379-050a-f504caeb60ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34943\/dylan-cease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dylan Cease<\/a>. They might get priced out of a Bichette return, but they haven&#8217;t closed the door on it.<\/p>\n<p>With more than $85 million due off their books next winter, the Blue Jays have not waited around for the market to come to them. They were aggressive when necessary to fill their targeted needs &#8212; starting pitching, bullpen, power-and-contact bat &#8212; and will now spend the rest of the winter using the cash cudgel that few teams can currently wield.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/lad.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers haven&#8217;t done much. There&#8217;s no $700 million contract. And no array of deferral-laden deals. The Dodgers spent the entire postseason running starting pitchers out of their bullpen, so to get arguably the game&#8217;s best reliever registered as another coup in a yearslong campaign full of them.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond D\u00edaz and a low-dollar deal for <a data-player-guid=\"c386ade3-196c-0e23-9a66-037745305863\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34947\/andy-ibanez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Ibanez<\/a>, the Dodgers are exercising patience. They just don&#8217;t have to be proactive in markets they believe will come to them. Would they like Tucker? Sure. Anyone would. Will they chase him? Nope. Not unless it&#8217;s on a shorter-term deal. Same with any free agent, really, because the Dodgers are now at the point where players believe their best chance at a World Series ring runs through Los Angeles, and the calendar is starting to force them to consider options they might not have otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/pit.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Oh, the fun time that was had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/46999006\/mlb-2025-26-offseason-passan-predictions-free-agency-kyle-tucker-schwarber-alex-bregman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">when I reported in mid-November<\/a> that the Pirates were planning on spending this winter. There was skepticism. Cynicism, even. Because these are the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the last multiyear free agent contract they gave out was Ivan Nova &#8212; and that was a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward two months. Pittsburgh traded for second baseman Brandon Lowe and signed first baseman <a data-player-guid=\"b9977f48-c75e-2e54-585d-08d2dcce13a4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35183\/ryan-ohearn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan O&#8217;Hearn<\/a> (two years, $29 million). They are sorely lacking outfield and starting pitching depth, though, so whether it&#8217;s a run at Tucker, a deal for Valdez to be the Opening Day starter they need or both, president of baseball operations David Stearns has work to do.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com.au\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47602351\/sources-kyle-tucker-fields-offers-mets-blue-jays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$50 million-per-year offer<\/a> to Tucker, reported by ESPN&#8217;s Jesse Rogers, is a good place to start, particularly for a team not interested in a longer-term deal. Sometime within the next week, Tucker is going to decide where he&#8217;ll play for the foreseeable future, and landing the best player in free agency for the second consecutive season &#8212; even if he is redundant &#8212; is the kind of power move moneyed teams have the luxury of making. Toronto&#8217;s perpetual runner-up status in free agency changed overnight with their World Series run, and considering the number of players they&#8217;ve targeted and fallen short on &#8212; in the past two years alone, <a data-player-guid=\"c0225b71-161d-fe89-5c62-d27fa64259fd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/36969\/juan-soto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Soto<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"00ce805c-4c3d-c1c9-ab93-a6410f947e7b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32685\/max-fried\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Max Fried<\/a>, Alonso and Bregman stand out &#8212; the Red Sox need to do one of two things: win more or bid higher.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it&#8217;s not as if the Red Sox have been entirely stagnant. They are the only team not to sign a major league free agent, yes, but they did get <a data-player-guid=\"e739e323-7ff4-bc6c-de71-f48ffcfaa329\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32532\/willson-contreras\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Willson Contreras<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"72a5bc3d-5cb6-d1ba-5828-789d8913ea04\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32082\/sonny-gray\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sonny Gray<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"8799ad0c-f467-4c4e-776e-bc15658b4552\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41405\/johan-oviedo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johan Oviedo<\/a> via trade. If the season started today, the Red Sox would be a playoff contender, sure, but with Toronto and Baltimore improved and the Yankees the Yankees, is that enough?<\/p>\n<p>Getting Bichette, who&#8217;s the obvious choice with Bregman gone and <a data-player-guid=\"7883628b-bd4f-c62e-015d-78c4c73ac3de\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32512\/ketel-marte\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ketel Marte<\/a> off the trade market, would provide a huge boost. There are other pivots to make &#8212; Nico Hoerner, <a data-player-guid=\"593a86dc-040d-4d07-7086-b3c4323d9a89\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41773\/brendan-donovan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brendan Donovan<\/a> or Isaac Paredes, with the right-handed bats more appealing &#8212; but ultimately all that matters is: Do they have enough talent? There are far worse places to start than with <a data-player-guid=\"758d4fc6-a046-3dc0-9280-c6279357128c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4297835\/garrett-crochet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garrett Crochet<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"4f21b684-60dc-336d-a11c-c5c765387ebd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/5080767\/roman-anthony\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roman Anthony<\/a>, but the answer, compared to their peers, is: No.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768401256_557_nyy.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Yankees shipped out four prospects for left-hander <a data-player-guid=\"5402c89c-491c-069e-9642-55ee5246433a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41178\/ryan-weathers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Weathers<\/a>, the first new player they acquired this winter. If no deal materializes, there&#8217;s ample reason to pursue Tucker (the Yankees signing the best player available in free agency is a tried-and-true tradition, regardless of the past few years), Bichette (who could play shortstop this year and slide over to second when Jazz Chisholm Jr. hits free agency next winter) or Hoerner (who the Cubs don&#8217;t want to trade but will for the right kind of arm).<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees&#8217; pitching has a chance to be really good, particularly if <a data-player-guid=\"58c38e07-3888-3b56-b9f6-6c6f4b1e9a20\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/5134581\/cam-schlittler\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cam Schlittler<\/a> continues his ascent and <a data-player-guid=\"af61347b-c222-7604-92c0-be4da7756430\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32081\/gerrit-cole\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gerrit Cole<\/a> returns from Tommy John surgery even at 80% of his former self and Weathers stays healthy. The lineup will hit home runs. The bullpen additions at last summer&#8217;s trade deadline form a solid foundation. There&#8217;s reason to believe these Yankees, as currently constituted, can be good. But they&#8217;re the Yankees. Good isn&#8217;t good enough. The need for more is endless.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/mil.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This is mostly a function of the Brewers carrying the best record in baseball last year and the expectation that doing so warrants an uncompromising follow-up to ensure it ends with gold rings rather than disappointment. Expecting that of the Brewers, of course, would be foolish. This is the team that leading into its 97-win season signed one free agent for $4.25 million.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it would be nice for the Brewers, whose front office has put together a tremendous big league roster with a top-five farm system to boot, to have at least a little money to spend and add talent beyond <a data-player-guid=\"81ebb1e3-03ae-bf50-7597-cdca620c8dd0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/40634\/akil-baddoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Akil Baddoo<\/a> (free agent) and <a data-player-guid=\"f0f5ec27-997d-3bf9-803c-277ae80e1a96\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4705673\/angel-zerpa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angel Zerpa<\/a> (trade), their lone acquisitions this winter. The Brewers instead are spending the winter talking about trading their best pitcher (Peralta). And while the churning of free-agents-to-be has been part of what has sustained Milwaukee&#8217;s success in recent years, it&#8217;s a thankless cycle for fans and front office alike.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the Brewers will sign someone who helps because that&#8217;s what they do. They work the margins, they hunt value, they make do. And whether it&#8217;s via trade or on one-year deals, they&#8217;ll hop back on the hamster wheel and leave everyone wondering what should&#8217;ve been.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cle.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Pretty much everything that was said about the Brewers goes for the Guardians. And while it won&#8217;t be Tucker, Bichette or Bellinger, others without jobs include Eugenio Suarez, <a data-player-guid=\"b87dd56f-f15e-897b-b6a6-1ce6491b150a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39572\/luis-arraez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luis Arraez<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"f8d7ba51-b248-d3b9-b18a-47fbcd596987\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35062\/harrison-bader\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harrison Bader<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"28193728-5246-4960-c537-f57ba948441e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/31668\/marcell-ozuna\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marcell Ozuna<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/phi.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Phillies have had a perfectly fine winter. They fought off a swarm of interested teams to lock down <a data-player-guid=\"657f83eb-5046-ab51-fc42-003dd9c43710\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33712\/kyle-schwarber\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Schwarber<\/a> for five years and $150 million. They added another late-inning arm in <a data-player-guid=\"5a308ffb-db14-fdfe-ffa0-76ae20567ae1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35292\/brad-keller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brad Keller<\/a>, who joins <a data-player-guid=\"0090bfcb-e1df-5247-83fd-ce29fbff5787\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41109\/jhoan-duran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jhoan Duran<\/a> to form one of the best eighth-and-ninth-inning combinations in baseball. They gave <a data-player-guid=\"36716788-f41e-30b6-0816-45ff0e6a3e89\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35537\/adolis-garcia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adolis Garcia<\/a> a one-year, $10 million deal to see if he can recapture his form. Touted prospect Justin Crawford is going to get a chance to win the center field job. Shortstop Aidan Miller is big league ready. The Phillies are reloading on the fly.<\/p>\n<p>One more elite bat would go a long way to lengthening Philadelphia&#8217;s lineup, though, and that&#8217;s what makes Bichette so interesting. Signing him would have a domino effect, with Bichette occupying second base, <a data-player-guid=\"d4aefc2c-4229-3f9b-8512-991a654183da\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/42417\/bryson-stott\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryson Stott<\/a> moving to third and Philadelphia presumably needing to find another home for <a data-player-guid=\"458877c2-2a07-a05c-ec2e-5ac6671c0a49\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41169\/alec-bohm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alec Bohm<\/a>. Too many players is a good problem to have.<\/p>\n<p>The Phillies have seven impending free agents on their roster who make more than $80 million combined.
