A bluntly named Chinese app<\/a> called has gone viral, striking a chord with Australians confronting the growing reality of living alone.<\/p>\n

Despite its morbid name, Are You Dead? has topped the list of paid apps on China\u2019s<\/a> Apple<\/a> App Store, surged to eighth globally, and climbed to 12th in Australia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The app prompts users to check in daily, automatically sending an email to a nominated emergency contact if two consecutive check-ins are missed.<\/p>\n

Described by its developers as \u201ca lightweight safety tool crafted for solo dwellers\u201d, the app \u2014 known internationally as Demumu \u2014 is designed to offer reassurance to people living alone through simple monitoring and emergency contact alerts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether you\u2019re a solo office worker, a student living away from home, or anyone choosing a solitary lifestyle, Demumu serves as your safety companion,\u201d the description says.<\/p>\n

First launched as a free app in June last year, the app has since introduced a fee of 8 yuan (about $1.70) on China\u2019s Apple App Store, with developers saying the move was needed to cover rising costs, including servers and messaging services.<\/p>\n

In Australia, the app is listed at $1.99 with Apple.<\/p>\n

Writing on Chinese social media platform Weibo, the developers said the app was built by a three-person team born between 1995 and 1999, who were overwhelmed by the surge in attention and downloads.<\/p>\n

One of the developers, surnamed Lv, told Guangzhou Daily the trio all have full-time jobs and worked together online on the app as a side project.<\/p>\n

Lv said the idea emerged from online discussions about the need for an app that could check in on people living alone, with the team recognising the demand and completing development within a month.<\/p>\n

The app has divided opinion online, with some users welcoming it as a practical safety tool, while others have criticised its blunt name as unsettling.<\/p>\n

In China, death is traditionally regarded as a taboo subject, and is often avoided in everyday language, making the app\u2019s title particularly confronting for some users.<\/p>\n

In response to the criticism, the developers announced on Wednesday they would also change the app\u2019s Chinese name to Demumu.<\/p>\n

Responding to claims online that its popularity was driven by the original name, the team said: \u201cThen it will be a good memory.\u201d<\/p>\n

The app\u2019s sudden popularity has reignited conversations about loneliness and isolation \u2014 issues that are also playing out in Australia.<\/p>\n

According to a 2023 report from the Australian Institute of Family Studies, more than one in four Australian households (26 per cent) were occupied by a single person that year, up from 24 per cent in 2016 and 18 per cent in 1981.<\/p>\n

Household projections from the Australian Bureau of Statistics also show lone-person households are expected to account for between 26 and 28 per cent of all Australian households by 2046.<\/p>\n
