Bangkok is examining plans for a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Chao Phraya River in an effort to revitalize the historic old town while introducing a new urban landmark.\t<\/p>\n

Trees and rest areas for pedestrians to view the city are seen in concept images recently revealed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, with designs from international architecture firm MVRDV.<\/p>\n

The bridge aims to broaden cross-river connectivity between Phra Nakhon and Thonburi, where crossings are now largely dependent on road bridges or ferry services that operate only during limited hours.<\/p>\n

It is intended exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists<\/a>, addressing a gap in Bangkok\u2019s transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n

It is envisioned as a safe route for everyday travel, while also enhancing cultural tourism in historic communities on both sides of the river.<\/p>\n

The bridge is conceived as a place for walking, stopping and taking in river views, in line with Bangkok\u2019s “walkable city” principles that emphasize quality of life, reduced car reliance and promote environmentally friendly forms of mobility.<\/p>\n

Officials said the project remains at the study and preliminary design stage, with an environmental impact assessment being prepared.<\/p>\n
