(Reuters: Gustavo Graf)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After discovering details of the reimbursement on the internet, Ms Wells said she hoped the full amount would be passed on to her, as banks often take a conversion fee and other payments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am not holding my breath that it will be fee-free but I&#8217;m sure I will see a little bit of money deposited into my account,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Confusing&#8217; situation\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Melbourne Law School consumer protection expert Jeanie Patterson said the unusual case had caused widespread confusion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the Federal Trade Commission brought an action against Amazon for &#8220;confusing interfaces&#8221; in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;People went on to Amazon US to sign up to buy an item and they were offered two free days of shipping,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;By clicking that button and in fact not opting out, they were [inadvertently] signed up to Amazon Prime, which is about $14 a month \u2014 or a year depending on the deal you got \u2014 and didn&#8217;t know they were signed up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They then weren&#8217;t able to unsubscribe and so at the end of last year there was a settlement and part of that was that Amazon had to pay customers that were affected back.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photo of a worker preparing Amazon boxes \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/096aba4c76d52da6ee3e01a512abb5d9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Customers were offered two days of free shipping, which also inadvertently signed them up to Amazon Prime.
