Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47314814\/mlb-2025-free-agency-new-york-mets-david-stearns-steve-cohen-alonso-diaz-nimmo-collapse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">set out to make significant changes this winter<\/a> after a frustrating season (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/46402004\/mlb-2025-new-york-mets-collapse-disaster-10-moments-eliminated-postseason-playoffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to put it mildly<\/a>). Running it back wasn&#8217;t an option. But it has been a shocking &#8212; and, so far, incomplete &#8212; overhaul in Queens that has fans on edge, an anxiousness exacerbated by <a data-player-guid=\"b963b85d-6db2-f0e5-b763-88d4a41c0d73\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34967\/kyle-tucker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Tucker<\/a> emerging from the smoke to choose the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"fb7cf413-5156-9fc2-abe0-2273b89f70db\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/lad\/los-angeles-dodgers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a> over the Mets late Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"122673a3-bf06-4432-6950-b8a32e52ac2e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/atl\/atlanta-braves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta Braves<\/a> have addressed their biggest needs, the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"ff1e263a-f6a6-93c3-1373-418623652ff0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/phi\/philadelphia-phillies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> have been active &#8212; with a huge move potentially on the horizon &#8212; the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"74909d10-eacb-1376-ef1e-d0f37d7c67ca\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/mia\/miami-marlins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miami Marlins<\/a> continue to accumulate young talent to take another step forward in 2026, and the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"a73e1046-e9aa-ef6b-4e0d-2a7c808cb284\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/wsh\/washington-nationals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Nationals<\/a> remain deep in their rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at each team&#8217;s offseason activity and what might come next. Additionally, we&#8217;ve assigned each team an urgency rating &#8212; from 1 to 5, based on how much each still needs to accomplish before reporting to camp:<\/p>\n<p>1 &#8212; Their work is (basically) done.<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8212; They&#8217;re having a strong winter, but more would help.<\/p>\n<p>3 &#8212; We&#8217;ll judge their winter on where it goes from here.<\/p>\n<p>4 &#8212; We&#8217;re waaaaaiting &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>5 &#8212; It has been a disaster. Can they turn it around?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/atl.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Key additions<\/p>\n<p>UTL Mauricio Dub\u00f3n<br \/>RHP <a data-player-guid=\"91ca4083-0323-3bb0-bf58-8f895ab33200\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4148749\/robert-suarez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Suarez<\/a><br \/>OF <a data-player-guid=\"3da1a8bb-b1b5-baea-9da7-ad7fc5ffab4e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33341\/mike-yastrzemski\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Yastrzemski<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they&#8217;ve accomplished so far: The Braves entered the offseason needing to address shortstop and left field after ranking among the worst in the majors in production at those two positions last season. Re-signing <a data-player-guid=\"bd7f9983-ae74-3484-8816-c1cd94f4f137\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4089862\/ha-seong-kim\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ha-Seong Kim<\/a> after a 24-game cameo in September and adding Yastrzemski check those boxes. On top of that, they added Dub\u00f3n for defensive versatility and landed Suarez &#8212; one of the best relievers on the free agent market &#8212; and re-signed <a data-player-guid=\"6636819d-5734-3a88-f323-65691e35e7cc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33618\/raisel-iglesias\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Raisel Iglesias<\/a>, to fortify the bullpen.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: In addition to upgrading shortstop, left field and the bullpen, the Braves began the offseason intent on fortifying the starting rotation. That hasn&#8217;t happened yet. Atlanta&#8217;s rotation has potential with <a data-player-guid=\"340816fb-4469-8d43-2e6c-738329c31ed4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/30948\/chris-sale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Sale<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"fe783a66-6c4d-3706-afae-cc30e5651f97\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4307825\/spencer-strider\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spencer Strider<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"f805dbf1-b179-3ce5-8e7f-dbd027796296\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4424862\/spencer-schwellenbach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spencer Schwellenbach<\/a> at the top. But each of those three pitchers missed significant time with injuries last season, Sale is entering his age-37 campaign, and the established depth behind them is light.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, <a data-player-guid=\"32fa0f56-ae13-e1ac-327c-fccfb0514891\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33860\/reynaldo-lopez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reynaldo L\u00f3pez<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"9626480c-4a86-39a3-a0ce-53c05619c80f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4740117\/hurston-waldrep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hurston Waldrep<\/a> would likely round out the rotation. A shoulder injury limited L\u00f3pez to one start last season. Waldrep, who turns 24 in March, has made 11 career starts. <a data-player-guid=\"98539c51-fe95-3ff2-a6b2-dcbebdaba489\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4917640\/aj-smith-shawver\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AJ Smith-Shawver<\/a> could return from Tommy John surgery in the second half, with <a data-player-guid=\"23f16e0a-42cb-3073-9c8b-23826ba7c097\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4301067\/bryce-elder\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bryce Elder<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"2642a31e-b2cc-a493-229e-f773b88bf143\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33840\/grant-holmes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grant Holmes<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"75b3bcd6-59a2-cdde-9bde-443a60d21c2c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/40927\/joey-wentz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joey Wentz<\/a> among the other options.<\/p>\n<p>The Braves, however, are already projected to field a payroll that is $18.9 million over the first competitive balance tax threshold and $1.1 million below the second threshold after staying below the first threshold last season.<\/p>\n<p>Urgency Rating: 2<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/mia.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Key additions<\/p>\n<p>OF <a data-player-guid=\"ca738145-8b74-34f5-a475-3d0e62eaa3d4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4917685\/owen-caissie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Owen Caissie<\/a><br \/>RHP <a data-player-guid=\"8c27dca5-e141-6c88-f185-250e1d19235f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/42180\/pete-fairbanks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Fairbanks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they&#8217;ve accomplished so far: For the second time in 18 months, the Marlins traded a quality starting pitcher with multiple years of team control for a package headlined by a young outfielder. Last winter, they dealt Jes\u00fas Luzardo to the Phillies. This time, it was right-hander <a data-player-guid=\"de267d58-fbaf-a33a-4842-526ae031aec5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/40944\/edward-cabrera\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Cabrera<\/a>, whom they shipped to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"5cda5067-7075-66b1-4b94-2333ab8d9807\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/chc\/chicago-cubs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Cubs<\/a> for Caissie and two other prospects. Then, this week, they traded another talented pitcher, sending <a data-player-guid=\"5402c89c-491c-069e-9642-55ee5246433a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41178\/ryan-weathers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Weathers<\/a> to the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"2b9cedf3-ce60-0bcf-fafe-8cd055255685\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nyy\/new-york-yankees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees<\/a> for four prospects. Miami hasn&#8217;t just unloaded, however, signing closer Fairbanks to a one-year, $13 million deal.<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: <a data-player-guid=\"c5b4a3d3-4a7f-24f0-c1cb-0bcc9a0b967f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35241\/sandy-alcantara\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sandy Alcantara<\/a>, the former Cy Young Award winner, has been the subject of trade rumors for two years. The right-hander is under contract for $17.3 million this season with a $21 million team option for 2027. He rebounded from a dreadful start last season to post a 3.13 ERA over his final 12 outings. He could help a contender. But moving both Cabrera and Weathers means trading Alcantara probably isn&#8217;t happening during the offseason. Miami, looking to improve upon its 79-win 2025 season, has the option of waiting until the trade deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Fairbanks helps the bullpen, but teams could always use more help in that department. The lineup is loaded with potential, but first base is a spot that could use an upgrade. Currently, <a data-player-guid=\"454149fa-78f6-3863-a2fd-836175dd78eb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4622931\/graham-pauley\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Graham Pauley<\/a>, who hit four home runs with a .678 OPS in 62 games, projects as Miami&#8217;s starting first baseman. Gone are <a data-player-guid=\"2b690698-f589-368f-f216-6df6ffa1b5da\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32159\/brandon-nimmo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Nimmo<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"33ba43fd-9a28-0e56-1012-5c9e5881a570\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/37498\/pete-alonso\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pete Alonso<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35394\/edwin-diaz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edwin D\u00edaz<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"48c3e09e-7d43-c919-77b8-493369185b4f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33900\/jeff-mcneil\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff McNeil<\/a> &#8212; plus <a data-player-guid=\"68e66e14-871b-209d-179a-d6cf21a8514e\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/34026\/tyler-rogers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Rogers<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"c68033e3-02a5-a966-e3a0-79aff414eceb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39804\/gregory-soto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gregory Soto<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"ebfb01b1-0078-0dc9-6fc9-a9a5a30c4b6b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33301\/ryne-stanek\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryne Stanek<\/a>. None of those players, however, are on Tucker&#8217;s level.<\/p>\n<p>Bold MLB predictions for 2026<img decoding=\"async\" data-lazyload=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/r1594731_608x342_16-9.jpg\" class=\"round lazyload\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The world champion Orioles? A Skubal trade? Here&#8217;s how the year ahead could play out.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47445503\/mlb-2026-predictions-bold-picks-orioles-mariners-world-series-wbc-tucker-skubal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bold MLB predictions for 2026 \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: The Mets are going to acquire an outfielder and starting pitcher. Who, exactly, is unclear. Their top choice among the available outfielders was Tucker, the consensus top free agent on the market, whom they offered a competitive short-term contract before he joined the two-time defending World Series champions. Tucker wasn&#8217;t a clean fit &#8212; he bats left-handed, graded out as a below-average defender last season and plays the same position as <a data-player-guid=\"c0225b71-161d-fe89-5c62-d27fa64259fd\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/36969\/juan-soto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Soto<\/a> &#8212; but Stearns believed his offensive skill set warranted overlooking those flaws.<\/p>\n<p>The other obvious free agent option is <a data-player-guid=\"33de8a2e-6a24-ed47-a5ea-e31b6a1d03df\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33912\/cody-bellinger\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cody Bellinger<\/a>, a better and more versatile defender with a lower offensive ceiling. The Yankees want to re-sign Bellinger, but the two sides are in a stalemate over contract length; the Yankees have offered him a five-year contract, but Bellinger wants seven years. Other cheaper alternatives include former Met <a data-player-guid=\"f8d7ba51-b248-d3b9-b18a-47fbcd596987\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/35062\/harrison-bader\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harrison Bader<\/a> in free agency or acquiring an outfielder like <a data-player-guid=\"424c3edb-8de4-3ea3-b12a-36ad2d0450fb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4448736\/lars-nootbaar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lars Nootbaar<\/a> via trade.<\/p>\n<p>As for the rotation, the Mets have expressed interest in free agent left-hander <a data-player-guid=\"01b35349-cb23-ea37-392e-bfac05c9c4eb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/36581\/framber-valdez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Framber Valdez<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4750d73d-d92e-b390-758c-2c7b44a810db\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/mil\/milwaukee-brewers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a> right-hander <a data-player-guid=\"aa1cac72-2915-387f-9e32-4b2f84f52b1d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39825\/freddy-peralta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Freddy Peralta<\/a>, who is owed $8 million this season before reaching free agency.<\/p>\n<p>One thing to keep in mind with Valdez, Tucker and Peralta: The Mets&#8217; front office has deep connections with the Astros and Brewers, starting with Stearns. Stearns was an assistant general manager in Houston when the Astros drafted Tucker in the first round and signed Valdez out of the Dominican Republic in 2015. He then became the Brewers general manager in September 2015, months before Milwaukee acquired Peralta from the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"56d60582-088f-6848-5180-1fb04440cf87\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/sea\/seattle-mariners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Mariners<\/a>, and oversaw Peralta develop into a big league mainstay.<\/p>\n<p>Urgency Rating: 5<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"floatleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/was.png&#038;h=60&#038;w=60.png\" width=\"30\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Key additions<\/p>\n<p>C <a data-player-guid=\"e828aa4b-8894-3bb6-959d-4f6f1bb407c6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4872682\/harry-ford\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Ford<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What they&#8217;ve accomplished so far: The Nationals&#8217; extended rebuild is under a new regime. The former No. 3 overall pick was an All-Star for the first time last season after posting a 3.02 ERA in the first half, before struggling down the stretch. They signed Adolis Garc\u00eda, who had been non-tendered by the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4fa2cf46-09fc-255f-74a1-2a8857b0e671\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/tex\/texas-rangers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Rangers<\/a>, to a one-year, $10 million deal, and gave Brad Keller a two-year, $22 million contract.<\/p>\n<p>What they still need to do: To start, the Phillies have a glaring hole at catcher with <a data-player-guid=\"41ae4f9e-14bf-805b-eccc-d36833f67e13\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32177\/jt-realmuto\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">J.T. Realmuto<\/a> still a free agent. They&#8217;re expected to address that position &#8212; whether it&#8217;s re-signing Realmuto or acquiring someone else. The rotation should be a strength when Zach Wheeler returns midseason, but losing Ranger Su\u00e1rez, who agreed to a five-year, $130 million deal with the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c6df06f6-785d-3900-4935-5fd13742e2ee\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/bos\/boston-red-sox\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Red Sox<\/a> on Wednesday, hurts, and the Phillies could look to add depth.<\/p>\n<p>But the biggest move the Phillies could make &#8212; especially if they don&#8217;t re-sign Realmuto &#8212; is signing <a data-player-guid=\"bd16899c-bd8d-ad25-94e9-c1d9731ccd0d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/38904\/bo-bichette\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bo Bichette<\/a>.
